Default Oil pressure gauge question

Just my paranoid brain searching for problems that probably aren't there.

When the key is in the on position, but the car not running, where shoudl the needle on the oil pressure gauge be reading? Mine reads about 1 without the car running but at that key position. With the key off it falls to below 0.

Since nobody else......
Key off means no power, thus the needle will drop to the stopper as forced by the spring in the gauge. This usually is below the zero reading.
Look at your fuel gauge, should do the same.

What would worry me is that the gauge reeds 1, without the engine running (unless it is 1 PSI, then I would easily forget about it).
Might want to check the contacts on the sender for corrosion and the sender itself for proper operation.

So it is supposed to read more? Or less?

Oh yeah, with the key off, it does go to the stopper. It is with the key to the point where the fuel pump turns on that it reads 1. I was thinking maybe that it recieves a check signal then of 1, to show you it is indeed functioning.

With engine not running and contact on it should read Zero.

Anybody know what signal corresponds to a given reading on the gauge?

Shiet... while running, my gauge reads 4.5 or so when driving, and at idle around 2.5... That was right according to people.. does this mean I may actually be reading 3.5 and 1.5? Eeek...

The units on the gauge are bar...1 bar is atmospheric pressure so with the key turned to run but the engine not started, a reading of 1 is A-OK. A little bit more than 1 in Death Valley, a little bit less than 1 in Vail  .

Sounds like your gauge is working perfectly under all conditions, Devon.
