Default I'd love a little rice with my steak and potatoes.(a small rant)

I know that most members speak badly about ricers. I agree that some of the stuff I've seen on some compact cars are just plain ridiculous. 1,000 watt sound systems, horrid vynil stickers, enough mod to blow up their cars.

What I do think is that some mods, engine or accessories, actually look cool. Hell, look at those special edition Porsches with costom interior, altered engines that look like art on to themselves. So why the avertion to ricing up the 944? I have been elbowed by 911 owners saying that the 944 is not a real porsche, so why do the same foward?

Plenty of guys here customize their cars, and there's nothing wrong with that at all. The issue with ricers is how overboard and ridiculous they usually are (aka the bright yellow interior pieces, yuck). I've seen some Japanese cars that looked alright with the right mods, but the general case is that most aftermarket companies for them sell the most outrageous looking things that go past looking "custom" and into the "absurd" category and do things like actually INCREASING aerodynamic drag on their "aero-kits" and slowing the car down when it's supposed to make it faster. It's not uncommon to see a bone stock Civic toast a "modded" one fairly badly at the drag strip. That's rice.

And the sound coming from those exhaust systems they use is just horrendous. With the right system on it I've actually heard them sound kinda good, but again, the general case is, the louder and crappier it sounds, the "faster" it is.

rice is a type of owner, not a type of car if you ask me. i've seen "ricer" show cars that look fantastic, they're probably slow and heavy, but the attention to detail by the owners is amazing, down to the tiniest peice of molding they can somehow find in yellow and purple (ok, the colors aren't always great), they show a ton of appreciation for their cars. these are not "ricers."

the ricers i hate are the ghetto losers who stick an unpainted front bumper with chicken wire grate on their 91 civic, then proceed to ram into things so they've got shards of fiberglass hanging off their front end. this is ridiculous. so are the stickers on stock, rusting cars. so are the giant wings on unmodified vehicles. these are just hangers on, these guys don't know jack about cars and they don't care to, they just want to pretend they can fit in with guys who do. and that is rice.

my .02, take it or leave it

Pretty much - I say they might as well do it right and at least paint what they put on. How can something be worth doing when someone goes at it only halfway?

Yeah, and everyone here paints their parts when they put it on? You know.. most ricers who do that stuff, are waiting to put on the rest of teh parts and have the whole car repainted. I'm not standing by anything.. I'm just saying, think about it... Most people who go to "rice" out their car do not spend a bunch of cash to buy and install an ground effects kit or something, to leave it unpainted. Generally they have a lot else to do before the car is ready for paint. Maybe they need to visualize it even, to see what color theyw ant it to be?

I'm not saying rice is cool, or that we should all rice our 944's, I'm just saying, think before you downplay the owners of those type of cars. They are an art just like our own.
f you
PS- If you see painted brake drums through the wheels.. Then you can flame away!

Now that you mention it, I've seen a number of posts that include things like "just got the mirror and door handles painted, can't wait til they're installed" or "the car's being painted and the XXXX isn't here yet. I don't see a lot of Porsched running around with unpainted sideskirts, bumpers or hoods.

Speaking of paint, I won't even go into the Sherwin Williams cat back.

Rice is a state of mind!

My comprehensive (or not) list of rice mods:

10mm spark plug wires for instance with the same core as a 7 or 8mm.
Lime Green interior bits.
Any spoiler purchased at an Autozone (yeah, they sell them there now)
Painted brake drums
Neon anywhere on the car except the radio face plate and even that is iffy.
Turbo sound device
Wheels greater than 18" on a car with less than 110 HP
Airbag supensions (there are a few notable exceptions but if used with any of the above parts, rice)
Primered Body Kits
Type R badges (plain R badges also included as is S, powered by V-Tec, powered by Acura, etc)
Seat belt covers that say Nismo, TRD, etc
Clear hoods
CF hoods that dont fit

Man my list is getting long, how about some other contributors. A great judge once said of pornography, I cant define it but I know what it is when I see it. That same definition applies to "rice".

BTW, I love steak and potatoes but I had Middle Eastern food for dinner.

I'm talking about the kind that you see month after month with a few bodykit pieces, all unpainted or primered. I've known too many people that would start something, get halfway done with it, then lose interest. It's not just cars - trucks, home projects (I've seen someone paint half their house, then wait 7 years to finish the job!) you name it.

Painted brake drums - not hard to find over here!

The term rice is kind of insulting to asians and anyone who owns an asian car imo.

But generally, the term rice (here at least) means installing modifications changes that look fast but do not actually improve performance.

Such as fart cans, K&N cone filters and red-painted calipers.

spinners with led's are the utmost in classless and useless geegaws.

I agree, the term "rice" is insensitive.

Any ideas what we should consider a replacement term for "ricer"?
