OK, I'll bite.

Don't do it! The 944 trans is not meant for that. You will need to replace the trans in rapid order when the ring and pinion gears shred into a bunch of shiny little bits. My car is on it's 4th transmission and it only has 82K on it. And I don't launch or powershift, but I do autocross which is probably just as bad and very dynamic.

While people are looking... Say, in rain, since my rear tires are crap, they spin real easy. If I actually try to spin them a little in the rain (not even dropping the clutch, just 3/4 throttle in first once clutch is out does it.. when the tires spin fast,,, feels like the tire that is spinning is, bouncing like he mentioned... Is that something with our suspsension? tortion bars not stiff enough? KYB's just don't cut it?

Just curious.. I don't drag. Just making sure nothings wrong..

1. Rev to 6k

2. Side step the clutch

3. Walk to the nearest phone booth to call a tow truck

As Tifo said, drag launches are just asking for trouble.

I was running some standing kilometers with a Boxster one day. Showed him what a 968 can do, but after about 6 runs this happened.

From now on I will save my launches for AutoX and take them softer!

Close, take it to 5000 dump the clutch and enjoy the ride. I am waiting to kill a trans but not yet, however I obviously don't have the same power that some do. Actually the real reason my trans holds up is because my car has at least a 3rd of its weight gone and possibly more. In the real world on a strip the tyres should grip and the transmission takes a hit and the car should launch, on the street or on street tyres the rear will grip and bite, grip and bite, grip and bite, hitting the trans with as much or even more force at higher revs hammering the r+p. The result is 30 rennlisters telling you how they knew this would happen, the same 30 told me that you can't drag race a porsche, sell it and buy a turdo, and the crowning glory, its an exotic sports car.
So my advice is get some DOT slicks and go easy on the trans, low profile tyres are not for the strip and tall slicks do NOT handle.

I'm sure you can do a search, there's a few out there, most about 4-5 years old discussing the ways that I will be doing an injusting the the Porsche world at large by putting a working engine in a scrap car.

A 951 tranny would SUCK in an n/a as the gearing is higher. The gearing is too high on the n/a tranny anyways since the engine runs out of juice before it runs out of gear.

I know that putting a 951 tranny in a 944 is bad, I was just wondering how much stronger they were than n/a trannys. I don't see many turbo guys breaking transmissions (ateast not near as many as the n/a guys)

I agree, the tranny isn't the issue on the 951, the axles and cv joins are weak points. They snap like twigs if launched too hard...........

Generally speaking, a well maintained 951 transmission is virtually bullet proof, High performance places such as Lindsey Racing, koklen, tak it easy on launches and don't 'bag' during shifts (thos epeople literally have 500+hp engines or so). Yet they don't break transmissions.......it's all in the Technique.........

Yeah, but a 944NA tranny won't last long with drag-racing; probably no more than 1-season.

Ok, here's the procedure I've found that works best for launching a 944NA to get the best 1/4-mile times & speeds:

1. rev up to 4000rpm (best to get a dual-RPM drag rev-limiter)
2. when 2nd to last light goes up, floor the gas-pedal
3. at the same time, release the clutch slowly so that it starts to grab at 4200rpm and is fully engaged by 5500rpm (this slip is necessary to break free the tires just right)
4. rev 1st gear to 7000rpm
5. powershift into 2nd gear, rev to 7000rpm
6. powershift into 3rd gear, rev to 7000rpm

This procedure is guaranteed to get you the fastest 1/4-mile times possible. No expressed or implied promises on how many times you'll be able to repeat it before something breaks. As a comparison, a 5.0L MustangGT from the early '90s can have a clutch replaced for less than $500... Go check with your local dealer to see what it would be for a 944NA clutch job.
