A nice little "indulge yourself" topic.

So I'm always scheming about cars and long range plans. They usually revolve around improvements to my 951 ( Fikse wheels, a hardcore suspension setup, Big Reds, etc). However, sometimes they drift to thoughts on a 993 C2S, keeping the 951 bone stock, or even a second dedicated track car - which brings me to two questions.

1. Which chassis would make a better bare bones track car - a 924S, a pre 85.5 944, or an 85.5+ 944?

2. What are your grandiose Porsche ideas for the future?

My answers:

1. The three chassis you mention are very similar - almost identical. A little weight difference is about all I see, and that can be easily adjusted.

2. What are MY grandiose plans? Well, for my car, this winter is when I finally plan on my long awaited suspension plans - 400 to 500 lb front springs, 200-ish pound rear helper springs: basically a setup very similar to the 951 cup series! Gotta get rid of the lean!

1. 85.5-----------the fenders will allow larger tires/wheels than the 924, and the late style of suspension (alu) allows for easier to find parts (rear coil-overs, etc).

2. I'd like to find a transmission that doesn't eat it's pinion gear every 1.5 years.

1) I concur with Tifo

2) Finish up the 951 to make it my daily (AC work, and mayabe some Konie Yellows). Then time to dive into the big project, swapping a 951 engine into the 968........ That seems grand enough, but if not I do plan on working over the suspension with some Leda's and M030 sway bars.....

1) Finish "refreshing" my car by replacing all the wear-items like bushings, seals, electrical stuff, etc. so it can be a good daily driver. Hopefully get some Fuchs in a year or so, some better seats, and a couple of cosmetic things like paint/body work to fix some scratches, fading, and dents.

2) Get a 951 once I'm done with school and go from there.

2) take an S2 cabrio, rebuild the engine with low compression pistons, throw on a turbo setup (Lindsey turbo, intercooler, wastegate, MAF, blow off valve, intake manifold), M030 sway bars, koni arhk coil overs up front, KLA coilovers for the rear, LSD tranny, possibly big reds for the front, new alpine headunit, alpine speakers, and 2 alpine 12" type R subs in a custom downfire box in the trunk....

Throw more money at my 951 to make it more powerful, handle better, fix the paint, add a few nice looking things like headpanel vents and CGT scoop, get stock Sports Seats (racing seats dont appeal to me), and a few other things.

One day id like to have a turbod 3L 951. Maybe 3 liters+, and something crazy like double wishbone suspension

ROTFLMAO, how's a round figure of $50k sound? I figure I could find a 993 C2S for that...The debate in my mind is between the ideas of making the 951 just plain deadly or moving up the ladder to the dark side. I'd say now I'm 55%/45% in favor of keeping the 951. It would be so much fun to throw in as much $ as I bought it for and make it a Fikse-wearing, Big-Red-Braking, no-lean-no-roll-no-nothing track machine.

Haha, always fun to juggle ideas that won't be reality any time soon! Good points on the 1st question as well, thanks. And yes, Ian, your scheme fits the bill as "grand enough" I'd say.

2. Big Reds, Full Coilover suspension, mo30 sways, all new bushings throughout, 18" 996tt wheels, 325rwhp w/ a proven turbo ie K27/6 or Stg2 vitesse (w/ car setup to take abuse, not glory dyno runs) and lastly recaro pole positions covered in black leather. Im not stopping till shes done...I get excited just thinking about it.

My number one plan at the moment is to stop obsessively checking eBay and Autotrader for another 968. If anyone ever happens upon a 1992 Rubystone Red 968, however, PLEASE let me know!

Seriously, it is time for me to stop buying and start completely focusing on the machines that I am so thankful to have in my possession. That is Porsche plan #1.

In terms of plans for the individual Porsches:

1) 1986 951 (I call it the "Ian Special")--Since Ian did such a tremendous job with his selection of components for this car, I find it lacking in nothing! The only thing that has crossed my mind in terms of an upgrade is to convert to 968 aero mirrors.

2) 1989 951 (Velvet Red Twin #1)--The plans are to leave her completely stock, down to the original Club Sport wheels. (Well, she has chips.) If the head gasket ever blows (please no!), I would replace it with a wide-fire set.

3) 1990 S2 (Velvet Red Twin #2)--Except for a hotter chip, she is also completely stock, down to her D90 wheels. My current plan is to leave her that way, even though M030 plans have crossed my mind. After driving her today, I was once again reminded that there is something extremly special about the car's "tossability," and I don't want to lose that by converting to M030. I love the raw feel of my S2.

4) 1992 968--As of now, she is completely stock except for 17-inch 993 wheels. I can't lie, just as most 968 owners, I have had visions of this "Black Beauty's" becoming a converted 968 Turbo S "Black Beast." Since that would cost me upwards of $20,000, it is a distant dream. I also have considered some tamer (read, cheaper to the tune of $18,000) mods, such as the 45 HP horsepower package that Powerhaus offers. Also, M030 on my 968 would be quite nice. I think I could live with that.

To be honest, I am perfectly content with each car in its current condition. But, since the subject of dreams came up, I couldn't help myself.

88 924S (SE if possible) - best out of the box deal. Usually less buy-in than 944, best engine, short fifth, prob LSD, lightweight, perfect suspension mix, easy to modify (dash easier to modify for cage, etc), fits in all correct PCA, SCCA, POC, and 944-spec classes.

Default Grandiose Porsche Ideas ...

Until my dreamy, Copenhagen blue, 1986 951 invades my space someday...The 86' NA with the pumped, 2479cc, water cooled engine, has recently explored alternative upgrade modificaton paths, over the past year. One observaton was noticing how robust, and absolutely healthy a new motor can sound like. The donor engine is a factory-licensed, Kolbenschmidtk(KS) Alusil-treated cylinder honing /aluminumizing process.
