Default Those with good speakers

Im restoring the interior. Now the setreo system needs an upgrade.

I have a good steroe, but was asking regarding the speakers, looks like the 4X6 speakers are very VERY rare here, and im sure that they are 'wow' in quality (unless anyone knows elsewise).

Now, how to fit larger speakers? (6X9), would drilling/cutting of the doors be needed?

You wouldn't be able to fit 6x9s in the doors, they are way too big. The best thing you could do would be to replace all of the 4x6s with Alpine or Blaupunkt speakers (these are the only 4x6s that are shallow enough), and then add a sub in one of the rear compartments.

They won't produce any bass, but thats what a sub is for! Besides you don't wanna rely on 6x9s for low end bass either...6x9s sound like crap when pushed for output. If you replace the 4x6s and add a sub you can have a clean stock look and good sound throughout the frequency range. Components are also an option, but that requires more cutting, and won't look stock at all.

Depends...where are you gonna put it? Just flop it in the hatch, spare tire well, or storage compartment?

Another option is to have the four 4x6's, and then put some 6x9's in the back. I did this because I had a set of $200 Pioneer 6x9's sitting around from an old car. I cut holes in the rear cubby covers, and mounted them there. If I had to do it again, I'd buy/ make little boxes for them so I didn't have to cut up the carpet.

It works ok. Depending on the actual notes, it can put out decent bass or sound like complete crap. If I had the extra cash I'd get the KLA spare tire sub.

Do a quick search as I have 6x9's in the front without cutting. There's also a 6 1/2 conversion also. I may have posted that on the Canada forum. Basically I have 6 1/2 Kef Uni-Q's in one, and Kaption 6x9's in another. The Kaptions are good....but the Uni-Q's are way way out there, they are both running off the old Haffler amps (before they became famous and became Fosgate). The 6 1/2 inch Kefs blow away pretty much every thing. I'm sure that other companys make equally as good speakers, at the time MB quart were on the up and up making some lovely sounding units. Infinity Kappa always sound good despite being too 'bright' for some. you need to find some unit's you like the sound of and then work out how to make them fit and perform in your car. If the search doesn't uncover the old pics I took of the conversion PM me and I'll send you the step by step proceedure for making custom door builds in an afternoon.

KLA makes a nice subwoofer for 944's. It fits in the rear cubby and sounds great. I know someone who has one.

I was thinking of that KLA one.

Just took out ALL the junk (tools except the tire, jack and the 17mm tool for the lug nuts).

Weighed in over 30lbs!!!

Talk about loosing weight.

I did a search, but same results, im going to see what i can do locally though regarding the subwoofer

I have boston acoustic plate 4x6's in the front , not sure if that what silverbean is talking about. I like them, but I really need some bass blockers, as they are nto good for real loud music with lots of bass, but i just usually fade to rear a touch.

I have just a 45watt Alpine Deck running 4x6 Infinity Kappa's in all corners and I think it sounds great. I have the Audi with Bose system (incredible) and it's certainly not equal but sound very good. When you add the cost ($200 deck, $100 speakers per pair) it's a downright bargain. The bass is flat and punchy with quick recovery. Not sure if you have a Circuit City or Best Buy or if you can have them shipped at a reasonable price but they carry them.

Sorry don't know how to post pics yet but here is a link to a pic of the speakers http://www.infinitysystems.com/caraudio/product.aspx?ProdId='KAPPA462.5CFP'&Ser=KAP&Cat=MEL

One caveat the front grills do not fit on properly but the speakers IMO look great with their white cones. You could get the grills on with a little ingenuity but I really like the look and it's fun at a stop light to watch the little guys work.

I have 4x6's in the front (Pyle's about 30 bucks) and Pioneer 6x9's in boxes in the back. Not to bad of sound for the original Blau. I could use a sub but I went very inexpensive on speaker upgrades (110 bucks total for all 4 including the 6x9 boxes). It is fine for my needs.

FWIW I prefer listening to the engine

4x6's are available from Crutchfield, I got mine at JC Whitney's as they were down the street.
