go with MB Quartz if you want crisp clear sound, Ultimate (Infiniti's line) for a good mid/high combo, or your reg. panasonic for "el cheapos" 4x6's are quite abundant but you have to watch the mounting depth in the doors.. 1.5" and you need some spacers! By the way.. the old Blaunpunkts (if your car came with them) will be superior to 9/10 speakers that you'll listen to.. just cause they're old doesn't mean they still can't kick it

If you are going to put a sub in one of the rear compartments, I suggest you have a custom fiberglass enclosure made for an 8" sub (assuming you want it totally hidden). You could do a 10" with a custom box, and have it partially in the cubby and partially sticking out, if that makes any sense. I've looked at the KLA units, but honestly I just don't think they are the best choice - I think they leave too much air space in that "enclosure" to work well with an 8" sub, not to mention that there is no way it is air tight - which just means even lower sound quality. This is not to say its not a good option; I'm sure for the majority of people it would work just fine and sound good, I'm just saying that I doubt its the absolute best enclosure for a 944...

BTW Alpine (if you get the type R or type X), Image Dynamics, and Diamond Audio (are they still around?) make really good subs.

Slowassporsche,
Does MB Quartz make a 4x6? I was looking through their website the other day and I could not find one. I am looking to get some speakers for my car and I wanted to go with MB Quartz with 4 4x6s in the stock locations and I already have holes cut for 6x9s. Running all those off a small amp I think would satisfy my needs. (I dont like tons of bass) If you know of a MB Quartz 4x6 please list the speaker number and a link if you have one. Thanks

I just put these Blaupunkts in the doors, seem pretty good:

http://www.bluespot.co.uk/stock/spkr5_2.asp

They have a very shallow mounting depth so no problems there, but the stock grilles sit a little proud of the doors due to the tweeter sticking out 1/4" or so.

I have MB Quarts front and rear. 4" (came with 4x6 adapter) with separate sattelites and x-over in doors. 6.5" in the back. MAJOR PITA to mount those!

Powered by a RF Amp, 4 channel, 400 Watts into 8. I wanted PPI, but the amp was too long to fit in the desired location. As it was, I had to remove the end caps off the RF amp (you know, the wire covers).

Then for base I put a JL Audio 8W6 in the passenger side cubby. I have not had box built for this, so it could certainly sound better.

Only problem is the amp overheats and shuts off.

aeronautica; the KLA units are fully sealed boxes from the pictures I have seen; about a year ago someone threw up a set on Ebay with pictures; showing more than just the top plate.

It's a fully sealed "true" box, not just a top plate. The volume in the box is .25ft^3, which, is just about right for most 8" drivers. Some will actually like as little as .1, some as much as .5.

Hmmmm Solobarics and 8W6's spring to mind, a nice genisis 240 or Macintosh amp and you'd be in buisness.

FYI I bought a pair of audiobahn 4x6 coaxials (not the plates) and they absolutely do not fit unless you want them to stick way out and not use the factory grill.

Why is everyone so attatched to their factory grills?? Who cares if you have to replace them with slightly different looking black after market grills?

Also, the speakers mounted in the rear window walls are covered in thick plastic...with tiny holes as a grill. Don't bother replacing them (unless they stop working of course). I replaced mine with The Audiobahns...and all you hear is muffled sound because of the configuration. Get good fronts, and a sub. Use the rears as sound stage fillers.
