Hey hes right about the spark plug wires. What if you put them on wrong when you got new ones? That can cause it not to start. I would check too, and look at the bright side, its free!

In reference to the spark plug wires, the car starts and runs normally after a whiff of starting fluid is sprayed into the opened air box, as stated from the original post....still perservering...

Update.....today I checked the speed and reference sensors according to the DME Diagnostic reference manual and Gary's Garage website information. First, when I went to disconnect the sensors cable connections, they broke apart in my hands. Their location, in reference to the intake manifold, makes them VERY susceptible to heat-related failure. The speed sensor did not pass the resistance test/voltage test, (duration of voltage signal not measured at this point.) I measured the voltage and resistance on the reference sensor and that test passed. I did receive >2.5 volts on the multi meter, although the signal was not sustained. I received 1100 ohms on the resistance test. So....although the reference sensor passed initially...it looks like at this time that that the speed sensor is causing the problem on intial fire. So..will order and replace both sensors. Thanks for ALL the input and help, special thanks to Gary B. on going above the "call of duty" on this problem.

Will update with results when sensors are replaced....

Thumbs up

OK...the start problem has been resolved...thanks to all the great input. I went with the speed and reference transmitters, (which by the way I learned that they are the same componenets when I ordered them); replaced the speed transmitter first since it controls fuel enrichemnt on startup. BINGO...started right up. NO MORE STINKIN STARTING FLUID NEEDED!!! My son-in-laws face lit up like -----grinning from ear to ear.
Now "red" needs new shoes.....

Thank you all again...!!

Is your tach bouncing when you are cranking the car? (Should move just enough to notice), if not, then the reference sensor connectors are probably shot, wiggle the black wires at the rear of the intake then try again.

Edit:

Ooops see you figured it out.
