Default Annoying window rattle

Drivers side window rattles only when i hit bumps or around 2200 rpm. Nothing appears loose. If I roll the window down 4 or more inches ,no rattle.Anyone have any Ideas on what to look at before tearing the door apart? All window mouldings appear in good shape.

You might need to take the door panel off and check the lower and upper rear window track mount. Several people had this problem including me. The PO let it go so long it will actually cracked the metal at the rear outer corner of the door from repeated closings. I LocTited mine a year ago and no problem since, including no rattles.

I have the same problem. I know that window was broken at some point (found the glass on the floor when I was fiddling with parking brake) so my theory was that there are washers or something needed to hold the glass and those werent installed....

Was your window broken? Maybe we can find something in common...

No my window wasnt broken. It sound like the track inside is loose.I cant see anything external that is loose and holding pushing the window does NOT stop the rattle. So i think looking inside is very likely.

does the track need to be welded back on to the door or can you just glue it? i heard that it's welded on to the rest of the door... making it not an easy fix

Problem solved and fixed! The window track had come loose at the top and was hitting the frame. It may have been welded Im not sure about that, probably tacked. My fix was to drill a small hole thru window frame(there was a hole in the door frame, maybe it was screwed. No screw was found inside the door)and I put a very short self tapping screw with generous lock tight! NO MORE RATTLE!!Yahoo a simple fix!Make sure there is clearance between screw and window as not to scratch your window. There is probably a 1/4 or more gap.

The screw at the top worked for me also. Did any of the metal on the door fatigue all. Mine has a 1/4" crack I'll need to weld when I paint the car.

Ok, since Paul's problem is fixed... I'd like to use this opportunity to introduce mine.

My drive window, when UP is perfectly fine. Opening and closing the door, no rattles. If the window is any more than 3 inches down, when closing the door, it clanks inside the door. If it is COMPLETLEY down, it rattles over bumps inside the door like its hitting the insides of teh door, I have to tap it up just a touch (just touching the window seal) to get it to not rattle.

after looking in side ,theres not much in there,i think that maybe the lower part of the window track is loose.Pushing on the window probably moves the position of the trackso it wont rattle till the next big bump.
let me know how you make out with it.

Hmm.. I also forgot to add, that, when I put the window up (as in closing it completely) it isnt straight kind of.. like it wont close, the front lip hits the wrong spot. I Have to put it down enough for my fingers to fit out, and pull the window towards teh rear of teh door... it moves like an inch! and then goes in fine.....

One question besides that...

Is there supposed to be a window rail in the rear of the door? I only have one in the front. I had always thought that was a problem. Like the window rail is of course all teh way around the top, but once inside the door it isnt there it looks like. (theres no window rail near my door handle or door latch?

Just to be sure we're talking about the same thing, this is the rear window rail from a 85.5 944 (drivers side). Normally, there are 2 small spot welds at the top and one at the bottom.

Devon... I will give you this for the cost of shipping ($5), not sure if I have the fuzzy for it and even I can find that, I'm not sure it is worth using.... Bruce

Unfortunately those rails seem to be spot welded in place at the factory. Getting the top repaired with a short screw is easy, the bottom is a different story if it's broken. I would try to repair the one in your door first; if the welds are broken take it to a welding shop and have them re-tack it. If you have a MIG welder you're home free.

I don't think there is a rail at all anymore.
