Which wheels came stock on the 1988 944 Turbo S?

Question Which wheels came stock on the 1988 944 Turbo S?

If you were the lucky owner of a new "S" version 951 built in 1988, which wheels came on the car from factory?

Someone in a European forum is selling a 951 with phonedial wheels as a 1988 Turbo S, and it was my understanding that all 1988 Turbo S and 1989 951 cars came stock with forged Club Sport wheels. Am I mistaken? Did any of the '88 944 Turbo S cars have phonedial wheels?

Luis,

It was my understanding that the Club Sport wheels were the standard wheel on the Turbo S, and 89 Turbos. Phone dials fit on the Turbo S just fine so its very possible that someone swapped them onto and S, but I don't think they would be standard issue.

Fronts: 16 x 7 (65 Offset)
Rears: 16 x 9 (60 Offset)
"ClubSport" Forged alloys with anodized face.

Is the standard, but I guess someone could have asked for the phone-dials instead!

From what I recall the '88 Turbo S came standard with forged Clubsports in 16x8 and 16x9. I agree with Ian, the phones would have been swapped on later. They were standard on the '88 951 but not the 'S'.

If it is a TurboS, I don't think late-offset PD's will clear the front brake calipers (S4's), unless they are the magnesium cup PD's.

I believe the Club Sport fronts were 7". It was upped to a 7.5" in MY 1990, but the wheels were cast D90s. Both setups had 9" rears.

When I "upgraded" my car to 17" C2T wheels, I had a tough time locating a factory set with 7.5" fronts. Only Wheel Enhancement had them.

Luis, have them check the option code sticker for the engine code. (Or the engine itself, of course)

The engine code for the turbo S was M44/52. The standard 951 is M44/51. Going by the wheels alone would be unreliable, but I've never known a turbo S to be fitted with PD's.

My thoughts, precisely, as ABS was introduced in 1987! Anyone care to enlighten us further?

Tifo,

I think the late offst phone dials will clear the S4 calipers, I've seen this set up on track 951s a couple of times. I didn't bother asking them how they got them to fit, just made a mental note of it.....

It's just a thread in another forum. The guy is selling the car as a "250HP 1988 944 Turbo." Just from looking at the pictures, I'm not convinced it's an S:

7" late offset phone dials do not clear the S4 calipers. 8" do however; those track cars were probably running 8" all around (dunno if it's possible to make the 7's clear with suitable spacers, I guess there's enough room to bring them out a few mm's).

AFAIK, all forged Club Sport wheels fitted on the 944 Turbo cars were 7" & 9" widths. The only other car with wider fronts was the 928.
