Default Dash Removal

Is it possible to remove the dash without taking out the center console, particlarly the stereo? The stereo was a pain to get in and don't want to remove it if I don't have to.

I don't believe so, but I must admit I've never tried. The worksop manual says to take the console out.

You thought the stereo was hard and you want to pull the dash?
I don't get it.

You might be able to get the center console out without removing the stereo, if I understand what you want to do correctly.

You can pop the stereo out without disconnecting any wires and slide the center console back a little. Then you should have access to remove the two bolts attached to the frame and slide the dash out. It's a tight fit but works....

If I have to slide the stereo out I might as well just take it all out. The only trouble I had when I put the stereo in was pushint it back far enough. With all the wires back there it was hard to get them out of the way so I could get the stereo in far enough. My dash has cracks on the top and found a better one.

Jeeper31, There's a bracket in the back of the slot the the radio is supposed to slide into. It's very easy get the wire into that bracket and the radio will not slide into it. You just have to look in there. There really is plenty of room in the console for the radio and a lot of wires.

I know. I got it in but it took a long time. Loads of wires so it took some time to make sure wires were not in front of or in bracket.

You think the stereo was a pain..........wait till you try to remove the dash without removing the console first. I don't think it can even be done. Like others have said already, you just have to tuck the wiring in behind the stereo a lot more carefully, and keep it out of the way of getting the head unit up on top of the spring support bracket. When you go to remove the dash, you'll have fun with the A pillar trim, and getting trim and dash around the ign. switch also. No, the fun is only begining for this endevor. (Not to worry, you can do it!)

Have fun!

Dont worry about it, its not a hard job just takes time. It took me 7 hours one day (started late) and 2 hours the next to get it 100% done. The hardest part was removal of the old some things really get stuck in after 20 years. All the wires in the consol are hooked up to plastic plugs that are hard to mix up (but can so keep track) that hook into the various gauges so that’s not the hard part. I recommend you take the seats out to do this job and you MUST have a stubby Phillips head screw driver for the screws under the dash, and the right size socket to get the steering wheel off. Other than that its pretty straight forward if you have any questions feel from to PM me I kept detailed records of the job in case anyone needed them.

I installed a new dash in mine last year (January 2003). It's a time-consuming job but well within the reach of the average garage tinkerer. If I can do it, anybody can do it! I started with detailed instructions (seems they came from Pelican) and took my time. Tip: keep all your screws & trim pieces in labelled plastic baggies. Once it's time to put Humpty Dumpty back together again, you'll be glad you did.

Ugh--this was before I had my seats recovered, too...
