Oil and Plugs..
pulled my plugs today and they are in about as good of shape as my rotor and distributor...(it blew up) anyways what kind of plugs you guys use? I have to run through some cleaner to get the carbon out after it running with that distributor bad for so long..so I will do an oil change too..I have been using Quaker state synthetic in the Benz's since they switched over to QS . But I heard that I shouldn't run synthetic in the porsche for fear of leakage. I don't know if this is true..anyone ever switch from regular to synthetic?

Three Wheelin'
I switched from valvoline synthetic blend to mobil 1 and haven't found any major leaks. Although there are a few, I can't say for sure that they weren't there before.
About the plugs, I think most people here will say that the stock copper plug is the best.

Hi,
this link may help you a little;
www.landsharkoz.com/techtips.htm
Look under "Lubricants for the 928"
If you are unsure over what oil was used in your car you could consider doing this prior to cahnging to the correct viscosity synthetic lubricant
1 - Change oil (with MANN filter) to a 15w-40 HDEO "mixed fleet" mineral oil and run it for about
2000 miles. Such an oil is Castrol's RX Super 15w-40 - but HDEO "mixed fleet oils" are made by all major Oil Companies. The oil should have the API rating of CI-4/SL on the container
2 - This oil will tend to gently clean the internals and "condition" the oil seals a little
3 - After 1) above, chose a suitable* synthetic oil if no leaks or other issues arise
*Always use a good quality oil that has the API ratings of >SL/CD> and ACEA's A3-96>/B3-96> ratings and in a viscosity recommended for the area (temperature range) that you live in
"Porsche Approved" and/or "meet's MB229.1" are also desirable ratings for the oil to meet
Check in the Boxter Forum for info on fuel system additives "cleaners" - but "Techron Concentrate" is generally accepted as being about the best around and was once recommended by Porsche. It could be used in conjuction with/during 1) above
I hope this helps you
Regards
Doug

I haven't changed the plugs that the previous owner used, and they are the "dreaded" Platinum +4's. Haven't had trouble yet, not too worried about them, though I'll probably go to a colder copper plug later on.

Hi,
the specified SINGLE electrode Bosch Platinum plugs work well in these combustion chambers. They were available from Porsche when the vehicles were new - as an option. And maybe to correct the certain operational requirements of some owners
I have used them in various engines since the 1960's and always with excellent results
I would be wary of using the 4 electrode plugs - platinum or not - in any engine unless specified. BMW and Volkswagen for instance do not allow them in certain engines as a matter of course and for very good technical reasons
Most modern oils must contain additives to control seal deterioration and conditioning. These are a requirement under both the API and ACEA oil grading/rating systems
