Pop quiz: ID this photograph
Found this rather interesting photo last nite.
It's not interesting because it is a 951 race car, but because of the date and place that the photo was taken.
Anyone care to take a guess?
(Those of you who have the "Excellence Was Expected" boat anchor, um, I mean book, need not reply, as you'd spoil the fun for the rest........ )

Well, the car is an early, judging by the wheels. Could be as early as 1984 as I think they had some running prototypes that early.
As to track, maybe Laguna Seca?

Bingo, Matt and Pete sorta team up to get the right answer.
Nelson Ledges, JUNE 1984. Longest Day 24hour. The car won it's class by 40 laps. They had brought the same car to the race in 1983 but had some problems, so the factory did some more testing and work on the cooling system.
It looks like it has 15" wheels. I *think* at that time it had not received the 4-piston calipers yet......

Dont know about the brakes but the 15" wheels so clear them, I have seen it with my own two eyes. As 16" wheels were not that popular 20 years ago it wouldnt shock me a bit.
You get us anymore pics of the Blua we are looking for in that there Encyclopedia de Porsches?

I do have several pics on my hard drive of Seb's friend's Maritime coloured Cup car, and also a lot of 968 ClubSport cars in Maritime as well. Want me to gather some up and send them to you?

Although there are no photos of the interior, I think it must have the early. In the section of the book that covers the interior re-design, it is implied that they didn't start working on it until a date after this photo was taken (early 85 I believe).
I wonder if this car is still in existence? It was campaigned by a local p-car dealer near Nelson Ledges and kept there between races for development work. I wonder if it went back to europe, was destroyed (probably most likely), or eventually sold to someone as a used x-racecar (sorta like that Al Holbert cup car on the 951 forum)?
Now that would be an interesting historical find.............

OK, while we are posting cool pics from the past, take a look at the size of the driveshafts on this 924CGT:
The trailing arms look to be aluminum, but since this pic is from 1980/1981, it makes me think that they are from a 911 (?) or are custom. Notice the rear coil-overs and huge sway bar as well.........

Early 1986 951's, depending on production date, didn't have 3rd brake lights either. Sam Grant's car comes to mind.

Did pre-86 944NA's have 3rd brake lights?
I remember, a long time ago, seeing a black and white photo of a 944 turbo with an early interior. I think it was a webpage that has since been taken down. Shame.
