Thumbs up Brake job done--even cheaper than I though!!

I dreaded bringing my car in to the mechanic to install the new pads and rotors I got (he said it may take 3 hours or more). He called me today, and said it only took 2 hours! $175 including bleed and fill! I'm psyched!

He did think the Zimmerman rotors I bought were going to rust due to not being painted. He said the Porsche zimmerman rotors are painted with a high temp rust inhibiting paint from the factory.

Make sense?? I remember Damian complaining about his rotors rusting even after he painted them...?

Yes the hats will definitely rust if you did not paint them.

Come on now Andy you can't say you're afraid of doing a brake job on those Brembos are you?? A pad change takes about 10 minutes..rotors involves all of 2 bolts per caliper.

Not sure about the rust thing...if they do rust you can pull them off, sand them down and paint them yourself if you need to. I need to do that myself soon..not sure what rotors exactly are on my car right now. Time to look through my records..

Well, glad to hear you didn't get reamed, but that's $175 for the beer fund if you did the work yourself

My previous thread seems to be missing in action.
In a nutshell, I decided that by the time I got the necessary tools, and found the time to do it, it wouldn't be worth it. For $175, it's a no-brainer to me!

Is it worth it to take the wheels off, and paint the rotor hats with silver (or clear) paint at this point??

Ok, so it's a one time investment in the tools, and then the next time, just your labor.

what I did was take the rotors off the car (please dont paint them on the car)
and sand them down..not that hard.
them tape over the rotor itself and spray away!
defenately worth it! plus they will look awesome!

dont mind my HUGE 1 1/2 in spacer and dirty rims

I should have painted them while they were sitting in the garage waiting to go on! Damn.

That sucks...yeah now you'll have to get the tools required for the job anyways to get them off and paint them. Ahh well, next time you'll be all set to do the job yourself

Or, let em rust. My old rotors didn't rust...although the hats on the rotors on my '88 (a Boston car) were rusted big time!

The hats on the Zimmermans will rust.
I did mine on the car (I know, I know) but it came out great. Sand them lightly with 600 or 800 grit, spray them with a little Brakekleen, mask off the rotor, lugs, caliper and antything else in the vicinity, and spray them. I used Duplicolor Hi temp engine paint (Ford gray i think). They came out looking factory. There might be a pic in my gallery.

The hats are really rusted on my car also. But it takes a long time to get that amount of rust on there. Eventually I'm sure you'll take em off again and you can paint them. If you do, I reccommend using a Duplicolor or Plastikote hi-heat ceramic paint that way rust won't get on it for sure.
