Default 968 with a 5 speed? Value?

Ok, you guys don't even want to know whats going on in my head right now, but for arguments sake, lets say someone was to say swap a 5 speed gear box into a 968 how much would the value of said 968 drop?

Lets take the amazon green 968 in my garage right now, it has a 135k on it, and I think it would sell for around 10 - 10.5.

Why-o-why would you do stuff like that? Man, you need a shrink, and a good one! j/k of course!

Didn't G96 have a 5speed in his? I think he sold it recently, you may want to contact him.

It's hard to say, a lot of 968 buyers are a different breed. "Originality" and "correctness" counts for a lot with them. That could kill the value of the car to them.

Why-o-why?

Well lets see, to put the 6 speed box into a 951 of course.

And yes, I do need help.

Is a 6-speed 951 coming to mind perhaps?

I would have to agree with Jeremy on this on the originality part. The question is...how hard is it to find 968 transmissions out there used and separated from its original car?

edit: haha, you beat me to it, quite an evil idea indeed!

Ian:
Stop it! You're making this very difficult (and tempting) for me!! (Note that I have a preference for 5-speed trannies over 6-speed ones! )

BTW: I think the 6-speed swap to your 951 is not just a 'bolt in' conversion.

Uh, wasn't the 968 6-speed tranny notorious for pinion bearing failures? Check with Konstantin and Raj, but I believe the 968 Turbo tranny is a 5 speed. The 951S tranny seems long-legged enough to me. I guess because I'm just a lowly stock 951 guy.

Z,

I don't think its just a bolt in thing either, but I think if I had a 951 and 968 on jackstands side by side I would have all the parts I need to do the swap.....

And do you really prefer the 5 speed? If so why?

Ian, just paint the car, turbo it, and be done.

A few reasons:
1. Less gears = less parts. (IE: Less parts that can break!)
2. The 5-speed is probably cheaper to repair (plus more are readily available)
3. The 5-speed probably weight a little less.
4. 6th gear is really a very tall over-drive in the 968 tranny - sure, it may save me $0.005 in gas on a long drive, but is it really worth it?
5. In track driving, I rarely even get into 5th gear, so why would I need an additional tall gear?
6. If I wanted closer gearing, I could get customized gears in a 5 speed for less money.

It can be done (note my signature). My new car was G96's old car. Pinion failure was the motive for replacement. Not much difference in the overall drive ratio.

I haven't verified the different drive ratios between 951 and 968 gears though.

btw - if you do this, and then add the turbo, you will have duplicated my car - provided it has the tan interior.

Z,

all valid points, and all reasons you should buy the 968 after I do the 5 speed conversion.....

As for gear ratios...

951:

2nd: 2.059
3rd: 1.400
4th: 1.034
5th: 0.829
Final Drive: 3.375

968:
1st: 3.180
2nd: 2.000
erd:1.440
4th: 1.110
5th: 0.910
6th: 0.780
Final Drive: 3.780

I think it will hurt the value of the 968 much more than it would benefit the 951. In fact I am not sure the 951 would benefit at all unless you were to install custom gears in the 6 speed. The 6 speed tranny is specifically geared to provide optimum shift points to maximise the variocam in the 968. I doubt those shift points would match up with the best shift points in the 951. And you will loose some top end with the 968 6th gear being lower than the 951 5th gear.

If you really want to do it I suggest you sell the 951 and reinvest the $2500 - $3000 profit you are looking for into a 968 transaxle.

It allows you to shift later and on the track that is worth every penny. On a long straight like TWS a 6 speed allows you to stay in hear MUCH longer before shifting. On the street, doubtful it would be much use.

Now if that 968 has a 2.5L turbo attached to the 5 speed gearbox then you are thinking like me and I would be willing to pay you for your "toy".
