Default Factory Wheel Upgrades - Comprehensive Guide with Pics on 944s

I've been contemplating a wheel upgrade lately and was frustrated by the overabundance of information out there. There's so much its hard to find enough useful info in one spot. Wheelenhancement.com is an excellent resource, but they don't have any pictures of the wheels fitted to a 944. My experience has been that most wheels look much different once their installed. Some I don't like on their own, but love on the car, and vice versa.

So I decided to put together a guide, half to keep my head strait, and the other half for anyone else that would be interested.

I limited the guide to factory Porsche wheels that bolt up to our cars with or without spacers. But left out the various stock wheels, we all know what those are and look like. I also included only a few aftermarket wheels, they only made the cut if I thought they looked ninja sweet or if they seem to be a common/popular choice.

Check it out...

I'm open for suggestions on things to add or change.

If you have good pictures of 944s with a specific kind of wheel on it, please post it to this thread and I'll add it to the guide.

I intend to add wheel weights and offset info in the near future.

Cheers.

excellent reference so far - worth the trip just for the pics. Great volunteerism!

Jake, I added that pic.

Dimitry, if you have any pics that would be useful on the site, post them up to this thread and I'll add them.

Glad you guys enjoy the gallery. What better way to spend a few hours at work when I should be doing something else, right?

Thank you for putting that together, thats a great collection of pictures.

Not to be picky, but under the link to pictures of 3.6 Turbo wheels, the wheels you have pictured are not the OEM speedlines. They are close, but not the real deal..... A minor issue, but I just thought I would point it out.

Just a quick warning regarding larger wheels and the 944:
Porsche does NOT recommend using wheels with a diameter greater than 16 inches on the 85.5 and up 944's, especially on cars that have been lowered. Lowered 944's with 17 or 18 inch wheels can cause greater stress on our A-arms and can lead to ball-joint failure.

Just an FYI.

Great idea and very nicely done.
You can use this pic of my car with 17" 993 Cup wheels if you like.

Z-man, I know about the Porsche TSB on 18" wheels but I hadn't heard that 17's were not recommended. Lot's of people have been running 17's for a long time without any problem
I installed 968 caster blocks and Rennbay's ball joint kit. I may add Rennbay's geometry correction kit also.

it was for both 17s and 18s, but who cares: 968: 17's from factory , 968 turbo s? 18s from the factory....bah! Lets put 20s on it.

That is definately the way to go: upgrade the weak suspenion points prior to going with bigger wheels.

20's on a 944? I think we need to change Sam's nickname to "Mr.Bling-Grant-951"
