Rear Main Seal Replacement
I have gone through all of the pain to replace the clutch and am in the process of removing the flywheel to get it resurfaced. Since I am in there (boy does that phrase cost me allot of money!) I am going to replace the rear main seal.
Is there any special technique to do this? I have been using all of the available information on the clutch job - boy is it helpful - but I can't find anything about replacing this seal. Is it just prying it out with a screw driver and then tapping in the new one? Any help would be greatly appreciated because it is so hard to get to, I don't want to mess anything up.
Thanks

Three Wheelin'
I have never heard anything about a color difference. Now i am curious to take mine all apart and see what color is in there. I think by red you mean a brownish color? That does seem somewhat familar.
About installing the rear main seal - First pry the old one out with a screw driver being careful not to mark ot scratch the surface of the crank. Before installing the new one LET IT SIT IN A FREEZER FOR A COUPLE HOURS this reduces the size of the seal slightly and alllows for a much easier installation. Take it out of the freezer and put a thin film of oil on it, tap into place with a rubber hammer...be gentle though and ensure its in evenly. It's simple don't worry...
Good Luck!

to get the seal started, you can put it in place, then install the flywheel and tighten it down with 3-4 of the bolts, which will push the seal into place, then remove the flywheel and tap the seal the rest of the way into place

Thanks for the advice and I will be putting it in the freezer to get it in. That's a great idea.
As for the color of the seal, I just picked mine up from the local Porsche dealer today and it is black. Since it is from the dealer, I am just going to install it. Hope I am not sorry later
Jake, you can drop them by tomorrow.
