Default Coolant Temp

With the a/c running and driving at constant speeds of 100kmh -- 140kmh, the temp needle creeps to near the second white mark (i.e. below the red zone) -- but always just below it -- and pretty much stays there while the car is moving. However when I stop (again with the a/c running) the temp needle quickly drops down to the first white mark.

To me the opposite makes more intuitive sense -- temp needle creeping up when the car is stationary and coming down when it is moving.

The engine seems to run/pull just fine even when the needle is near the second line. Has anyone else experienced this? Do I have a problem, or is this a sign of a future problem?

Don't worry unless the temp goes above this. This is where a normal temp thermostat will open.

PS... I drive in 100F + temps everyday.

could be a sign of your thermostat going,or you might have air in your coolant system.

Mine runs similar to yours.and has for almost 4 years.
The difference in temp is not that big between the 2 white marks.Does any one still have the temperature numbers that corespond to each white line?

For what it's worth, I think all this talk of "that is the normal operating temp" (above the second line) is a crock. I replaced the waterpump, hoses, fans (used) and radiator (new) in my 89 944 (before the swap) and the needle NEVER got above the second line -- always stayed just below, even on hot days.

The thing is, that radiator can get so clogged up (both inside AND outside) it's bound to have adverse effects on your cooling. Do this -- take the radiator out and gently tap it on the ground -- you will see endless amounts of dirt come out. Try pressure washing it (still won't get it all, careful not to damage it). Or you can get a new one.

Let me clarify my temp.It runs between the 2 white marks.Cool mornings, right at 1st white line.hot days at halfway point (horizontal.)occasionally goes to just BELOW 2nd white line.It never has gone above 2nd white line or into the red. Thats what I was saying is normal for me,and has not changed in 4 years of ownership. It ran the same with the old waterpump too.

Matt Olde...

Normal engine temp run between the two lines. A standard thermostat will open fully by the second white line. The second fan will also turn on then if the A/C is not on. Temp something like 210 at that point. While warm this temp is not hot. All of my 4 of running 944's have operating temps between the those two lines. Simplly put it is normal.

Now if your temps EXCEED that line you should concern yourself.

Thanks to everyone for for their suggestions. The car has never overheated even over the last two months when temperatures in this part of the world have been 45C+.

I am inclined to keep running it for now so long as it stays below the red zone (and so far it is WELL below the red zone).
