Default who makes a good supercharger kit for 944?

once again i have the itch. I know i know, buy a turbo yadda yadda. I auto cross, and the idea of turbo lag and such is not my idea of fun. So who sells a supercharger kit that is "realiable" and readily available?

I am still tempted to make my own using an old supercharger off of a ford thunderbird and fabricating a custom intake manifold, but I need to get my car back together first!

If you're into fabrication, I'd think that a turbo would give you higher available H.P. at the end of the day. . . I know there's your issue with turbo lag, but a twin turbo or fast-spool setup would help that, as would mounting location. The Callaway kit I've got (I don't have it hooked up yet, working on it) supposedly spools VERY fast and begins building boost as low as 1500 RPM because of its location right off the exhaust manifold. If you bought a set of headers and were willing to do some modification, I suspect you could do something similar and use a reasonable sized turbo to get really fast boost; I suspect you could fabricate all the intercooler piping and such for even less than one of those $6K superchargers will end up running you. . .

yes but i dont want a turbo, i want a supercharger. I think its the lure of no lag and that cool whining sound.

either that or what about a straight up 968 engine swap? That would give you a serious power increase and you could sell the old engine to make up some of the cost, it would be reliable as heck too. Isn't there someone on here who has done that, or is in the process? 944s3 comes to mind...

A little more than you want to get into?!?!?! What, do you think you can just throw $5K at the car and bolt on an extra 100 hp? No way. You'll blow a head gasket at least. To do it right will take just as much work as an engine swap. You should replace the head gasket as a precaution unless it's been done recently or you don't mind the potential of one blowing because you're going to do it soon anyway, double-check all the belts, seals, hoses, lines, etc, probably check your rings and bearings inside the engine. . . I'd be happy to give you a list of all the crap that goes along with this, since I'm doing it all on my car right now.

What compression ratio are you planning on running? What about exhaust backpressure? If you think forced induction is a simple "bolt on and go" situation, you're VERY naive about this - it ain't.

Plan on at least an extra $2K over the cost of the supercharger itself for prep / preventative maintenance work and at least 40-50 hours to prep the car and install the kit. If you're down with that, good luck and go for it! Post pics!

uhm ,ok, ive built enough engines to know what kind of work goes into an engine to make it run, and keep from grenading itself. Ive done turbos before as well. The HKS headgaskets, arp stud kit, new hoses etc....i dont want a turbo. If i could afford a 968 motor and had the time and wanted to mess w/ installing anew wiring harness and new clutch yada yada into my car i would. The point is i want a supercharger and my question was for those who could give me a reasonable answer not someone who thinks because i want something outside of the norm that i am some dumbass.

Hey, easy!

I never said you were a "dumbass" or anything, I'm just trying to help you out! I have no idea what your experience level or knowledge is or anything; I just don't want to see you throw five or six grand at your car and end up blowing up your engine or anything. If it sounded condescending, my apologies but a LOT of people on here and other boards always ask the immortal questions "can I turbo my n/a" or "how can I get more horsepower". It sounds like you know the truth behind the answers - there's cheap ways and correct ways. The best way I've seen it put is:

INEXPENSIVE RELIABLE FAST
(Pick any two)

You might consider Ebay; superchargers do occasionally come up there (not often, but I've seen 'em). Believe me, I have nothing against those "outside the norm"! Anyone that knows me will attest to that!

Speed Force is really expanding. Talk to Tim, he's a real good guy and he'll get you set up with what you need without blowing up your car.
