I would pay someone $1800 to replace the clutch and head gasket.... That sounds awful cheap for $600-$700 of parts and 20+ hours of labor. The car as it sits will probably fetch you less than $1k around here in S. Ca.

I agree. If I lived in Oregon, I'd be looking at this 951 instead as a fixer-upper: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=165355122.

Agreed it's in the wrong section, however it's $2000 not $4900, if you wanted a track car then it's a good start, hell for anything that you wrench yourself it's cheap. I'd personally put it in either the autotrader or break for spares, once you hit $2000 you put the car up for free and watch the same vultures who trash your car circle for the pickings. The engines as good as toast for our eyes as any car that has an already identified problem is too risky, this is the kind of car I'd do the 8 conversion as no one will be brave enough to take on this many problems. On the other hand at least its an honest description. Someone will chime with the nugget of 'the most expensive porsche is a cheap one', however your on a board that if you gave it away they would complain. I know breaking isn't ideal but if you had the engine removed and head stripped then as long as there is no damage your looking at $300 for a short block, £150 for a head, $700 for decient seats then rear transaxle $3-500 rolling shell with the rest for $700 and theres your $2000 and change. either way it's cheap enough to the right people. Try classifieds and autotrader, possably even e-bay, oh and good luck.
