How the hell do you get the damn fan switch off?!?!?!!

I tried a 30 mm wrench, socket, crawled underneath the car to do it and I still couldn't get it, ****!!! Tedious

Are you using a universal joint? That makes it easier. Also theres a hose above it, at least on the turbos, might help to remove that.

no universal joint. I have one, thanks for the tip, but theres still VERY Limited space and I don't know whether to remove it from above or below the car still. If anyone else has done it, lots of feedback would be greatly appreciated!

If memory serves, I got to mine from below with a big open end wrench -- after loosening the fan shroud.

I had to take the fans off (only 6 screws - infact only 5 in mine) and get to it from underneath with a big spanner.
Wouldn't bother draining the coolant - just have the new switch handy and do a quick change - you'll only get as wet as you would draining it anyway.
Also, i put a new low temp switch in and it is rubbish - the fans stay on as soon as it warms up and never switch off - i believe you need a low temp thermostat for it work right with a low temp switch - or a stock switch as it should be (that's what i'm off with).

It is very easy to reach from underneath if you remove the fans/fan shroud. I also used an open-end wrench.

No fans off, just take the right hose off and get a very deep socket...

Damn you must have nice skinny fingers! My father in law and I spent a whole day taking the fan off, changing out the fan switch, and then putting it all back together.. it was the putting it all back together which was the problem. It is so bloody hard to put the screws in which hold the upper part of the fan shroud on. It didn't help that they were stripped so we had to buy a tap and re-thread them.... We ended up taking off the entire airbox/filter apparatus so we could reach the screw holes.

Got mine from above very easily after removing the air box on my S. I know the non-S/Turbo is different but it may be worth a try.

I also noticed that you need an extra deep 30mm socket to reach the hex on the switch for air-con equipped cars. The non-air-con switch is shallower.

Cheers,

Neil
