Default Pinion Bearing - few questions for the rebuild

What I have diagnosed as being the main problem and reason for pulling off my tranny to work on it has been what I believe to be the pinion bearing ala 968 infamy. It has the same "airplane landing" sort of noise that is described over and over again with the 968 pinion bearing failures and also produces excess tranny backlash.

My main question is what is the location of this particular bearing? In looking through the shop manuals most everything is referred to as either a tapered roller bearing or a needle bearing. These are obviously quite different, and I know it would have to be one of the roller bearings, especially having seen pictures of the 968 pinion bearings.

Any help on narrowing down which one this would be would be great, otherwise it will involve pulling most of them off and checking for the excess wear that I am expecting to be there.

Thanks in advance.
