Question Does K&N oil filter get oil on parts downflow?

Recently I bought a K&N filter for my 944. I have no illusions about better performance, its just that I figured I'd save a few bucks with the reusable filter. After about two filter changes I break even with the K&N.

Anyway, I was talking to a friend today, and he said the oil from the K&N filter can screw up sensors downflow from the filter. True? Should I toss the K&N filter?

You will only have that problem if you do not let the oil dry fully when cleaning and oiling it. Just let it dry fully and you should be fine. I installed mine without it fully dry and it didnt do anything. I just cleaned it out.

I've read that this might be a problem on BMWs.

My guess is that it could affect cars with hotwire MAF sensors. Early 944s use a flap to sense air flow and I doubt this would be affected by oil. If later models use a different MAF sensor, it might be a problem. And, of course, just downstream of the air flap, there is a hose that vents the timing case, so theres plenty of oil sucked in there.

I ran one on my 83 for a year and a half with no problems.

Yeah, you mean the K&N air filter gets oil on sensors, right?

I use both the K&N oil and air filters. I've had the air filter for about 50,000 miles and no problems yet. But who knows, someone may have over-oiled the air filter and it caused that person huge problems. I doubt that it hurts the car if used correctly though.
