Default Mufflers?

OK I send my car in on Thursday to have a new muffler and tip installed, as I've been told that a 2.25" exhaust is plenty for my car so I don't need a cat back system. The shop that is doing the job carries Flowmaster, Magnaflo, and Borla. I want the best performance without getting rasppy like a ricer. I would say I'm looking for deep tuned performance sound.

thanks Greg

You don't say what type of car you have but the turbos came with 2.5 " exhaust. I bet the bigger displacement cars did too.

For a tip see if the shop can get a Ractive/Toucan T-820. It is 2.5" pipe in but they could neck that easy enough if you are going 2.25". It is a polished stainless true oval tip. It is about 3.75 x 5" with a slant cut so you don't catch rainwater and has a rolled edge rather than just chopped off. Looks pretty darn good which is why I bought one after a LOT of looking. Only costs 35 bucks, too.

I'd post a picture but John has made it too hard for morons like me to do that. If you want to see it and tell me how to post, I will.

just straightpipe your car you'll get the sound you want without any annoying noise that you don't want.

Dan, in the lower right click "post reply" then on the next screen click browse, that will take you into mt pictures on you computer. Click a pic, open it and post your reply.

Once I figured this one out it was a lot easier than uploading one.

I have a "cherry bomb" straight pipe that the p.o. put on and it sounds horrible. It is loud, and at 4500RPMS it whistles so loud that you can't accelerate anymore with fear of the car falling apart. I'm considering taking it to mineke for a cheap muffler or buying the bosel exhaust.

A cherry bomb is a glass pack muffler, I think. They sell at carquest/autozone type places for around $20. It's red.

My muffler isn't red, thats just what the mechanic said it was when I asked why it was so loud. They told me I could get an oem Bosel muffler, cat back for $350. The p.o. bought the cherry bomb or whatever because it was cheap. Do you guys think a cheap muffler would be any better than the cherry bomb or should I just go ahead and get the bosel?

I think it is a pipe that is slightly larger in diameter and is rapped internally with fiberglass.

A cherry bomb muffler doesn't actually look like a cherry bomb fire cracker, more like a M80. They used to be painted red though. It has an inner straight tube with holes punched in it. Fiberglass around that, then the outer casing.

I had one on a '63 Chev BelAir so no turbo or cat. It was pretty darn loud. I think that was where the "Cherry Bomb" name came from. Lay on the throttle and you would shake windows for a block around.

Do cherry bombs go in place of mufflers?
