Question a/c compressor removal and some questions

hey guys...i have no idea which hose is the a/c fast idle hose xcept maybe the two hoses that attach to the compressor...am i right? and if so which one...and also...to take out my engine it looks like i'll have to take off those two hoses to the compressor or just remove the compressor itself...but if that's the case what is involved in "recharging" the compressor system, or actually what's involved in updating the system to use the new freon? thanks

Where are the bolts that hold the compressor in place? Does any other component have to be removed before I remove the compressor? I need to replace the seals/o-rings because my compressor leaks out all of the freon in 2 days.

My car is without A/C and I can't take the heat.

hey jim...clark's garage refers to an "a/c fast idle hose" in his engine removal manual...i was unclear as to what that was as well..

oh and poindex...there are two bolts that hold the compressor in place...actually three when you think about it because one is connected to the alternator...but for the main bolts on the compressor there's one up top and then one down below...the one down below you'll have to use two wrenches or a wrench and socket wrench because the one on the bottom has a nut behind the compressor housing attached to it

It is easier to remove the compressor if you remove the air intake box and alternator, but it can be done entirely from below if that's easier for you. Removal is pretty straightforward.

Poindex
On my 86 you can put new O-rings on the compressor lines without removing the compressor. I believe the 89 would be the same.

Thanks for the info about the A/C compressor. I will try Charlie's method of replacing the o-rings without removing the compressor. I'm burning up in traffic!

Thanks,

Mickey

If you suspect the compressor o-rings are bad, keep in mind that virtually every connection of a hose to a component in the entire a/c system also has an o-ring. Are you changing them all?

This is probably the hose with a valve in the iddle that reduces the amount of air flow to the intake when the AC is ON. This hose and the valve are located behind the air box.
You don't need to remove this hose in order to remove the AC compressor.

Ideally you should take the car to a shop to recycle the old freon. In reality, if you have a leak, there probably is hardly any freon in it now. You can check by depressing the shredder valve in either the high or the low side ports, and listen for 'psssss'.
Important: read related posts regarding safty tips - AC systems can be dangerous.
