Top speed is about the same but it depends on which Turbos you are comparing. Porsche always lowballls performance numbers but regular 951s were published 0-60 in about 6 seconds with real world about 5.5 I think. 951S models were published in the mid 5s or something and real world in the low 5s. I think 911 Turbos were published mid to low 5s and I can vouch with nothing more than a stopwatch that around 5 flat is not terribly difficult in stock trim. I think the advantage in the 911 turbo is one less gear in the 86-88 cars (never driven an 89 5spd), which means second gear may be a tad longer, eliminating a shift or something. Even first gear feels very long, whereas the 951 first gear sometimes feels ornamental at best.

I believe the 86 951 was the fastest production car in the world for sale in the USA in terms of top speed that year. The 928S4 came out in 1987 and ultimately ended up having the highest top end speed of all the Porsches that year (165mph??), primarily due to aerodynamics. After about 100mph, the power needed to increase in speed goes up exponentially. Smaller engined cars with much better aerodynamics give the engine a much easier go of it. One of the reasons the relatively middle of the road powered NSX has an "average" 0-60 time but an ungodly 0-150 time because its extremely aerodynamic. I would NOT want to pick a fight with an NSX if you live in Nevada and have a long lonely stretch of road.

According to my October 1987 R&T Ferrari Special Series magazine,

As tested:

Testerossa: $120,700
0-60: 5.3
Top speed: 181

412: $125,000
0-60: 6.7
Top speed: 147

GTO: $200,000
0-60: 5.0
Top speed: 180

328GTS: $73,200
0-60: 5.9
Top speed: 149

Mondial Cab 3.2: $78,100
0-60: 7.0
Top speed: 145

512BB: $85,000
0-60: 5.5
Top speed: 188

4re308, expand your search to include 1989 951's. They are built to the same spec as the 88 Turbo S with only a few very minor differences. The '89 951's are much easier to find and don't command the "exclusivity surcharge" that the '88 951S does.

Hi Darius! Can I really get a 951 to blow off some 355s and 360s?? That would be too funny! Your car seems to be incredible. Pete, I am also looking at 89s as well. I think I can get into an 89 for less $$$, even though the cars are virtually identical. Well I am off to take the 308 out for a drive to work, and to change the oil. Hope everyone is having a great day.....

There are quite a few 951's on this board that can run with or flat out beat 355's and 360's for alot less money, heck with around $1500 you can take a 87 951 from 220 hp to 320 hp! I do love Ferraris and will own one in the future, maybe a 328 GTS, or Mondial.

Ferraris have their own aura about them.....they are really special cars and in my opinion are the ultimate sports car on this planet. Come on, it's a ferrari.

But, Ill have to stick to the 951 since it's such a nice car for so little money.

As I wrote on the FChat thread, my first track car was an '89 turbo, and it was a great machine. Many of the Ferrari guys who are track junkies or otherwise serious enthusiasts either have or have had Porsches, IMO only an idiot would disrespect the marque. I saw my first Carrera GT in person this weekend at Watkins Glen - think my favorite part is the engine compartment.
