Default Parting out questions (update)

As you know I am getting an 86' Turbo to part out.
My questions are:

Should I drain ALL the fluids or leave the engine/trans oil in it?

The shell is pretty much toast, will the junk yards take it/ buy it?

I want to jack the car up high as possible safely. I was thinking cinder blocks on the frame rail. I don't trust jack stands that much. Any other ideas?

Whats a fair way to determine pricing, I was thinking an average of ebay completed items, or a (low)% of new prices.

Please offer some ideas on this, as I'm a bit new as far as parting goes.
Thanks all!!!
Jason

Watch putting a car up on blocks because the blocks can split in half. I would trust jack stands in the right spots WAY over blocks. What parts do you have left? Are you selling one here or what? If you are selling on here, I would be interested in a few parts. Do you have the M030 sway bar still/rear sway bar? Also on odds and ends if you still have it. Oh yea, I would also drain everything in the car because if you strip it out, it will save weight plus who ever gets it won't have to drain it the fill it up.

The blocks are fine if you use them on the frame with a large wood piece that spreds the weight even all over the block. As far as prices I just put the bid on ebay and it would find the right price. If selling to people on rennlist or in town then just take a look at how much the parts cost new then see what used parts are going for on ebay or on rennlist. That being said what condition are your seats and what color are they? Leather? Price?

I've pulled 3 engines and installed 1 with all these cars up on concrete building blocks. Do not EVER use "cinder" blocks! There IS a difference between cinder blocks, and concrete blocks. Make damn sure your using concrete blocks, like seb928s said, use a 2by6 or better accross the top of the block to spread load out, and stagger the stack up of blocks in different directions under each corner for more stability. I use the standard 8 by 8 by 16 blocks. Do not stack them on their sides. Holes must be kept vertical in the stackups. Thats where the strength of the block is. I've used a total of 3 blocks with a 2 by 8 on top, and another small section of 2 by 4 on top of that, under each corner (makes engine removal really easy!). I don't think most people realize how very solid the car truly is when jacked up 27" to the bottom of cars block points, if, properly blocked. I'll tell ya what, I'll work on my car this way, any day of the week, before I'd even consider doing it this high with jack stands under it. And I own 3 pairs of em. I also have a long frame floor jack, so I can get it up there easily. Just remember, when the engine comes out, car will get a lot lighter up front. Drain all fluids before ya start. I've paid up to $55.00 to have a car shell hauled off. They won't "buy it" from ya. And you better have the title. Get real close to ebay, and watch what everything on these cars is selling for, for a while. Then, you'll get a lot better idea of what ya might be able to get for most of the parts, and how to proceed with an auction.

Reminds me.......I gotta get off my duff.......and get some more stuff up for bids!

Have Fun! Good Luck!!

Who came and got it? Was it a private buyer or a garbage-type company?

It was a local metal recycler. The low price of scrap metal, the shell weighing in at probably less than 1/2 ton. No....they won't pay me to haul it off.

Is the body straight? I just need a rolling chassis to build a race car. So body + suspension/brakes + torque-tube.

I use car ramps under the rocker panels. Much more stable than anything else I've seen.

seb928s- the seats are damn near perfect except for the stupid little plastic fold forward release handle is busted on one of them. The seats are even soft.....I've never felt soft 944 seats before, the are the leather type and black. Price...????

Thanks everyone for all the other tips!!!! I think the building blocks/2x8 idea is the one for me.

I think I'm hearing ............ROADTRIP!!

Jason, I wouldn't mind helping out at all! Sounds like it would be a good excuse to give my car a good run for its money, and meet another rennlister!

I'll bet with a little planning and notice, I bet we can pull it off!.....or is it drop it out? Let me know when your getting close.

I helped Lance (K27) pull the motor from his car, so I'm sure I could be of some help there... I'll (try to) bring down some of our famous Canadian beer.

Jason,

If you part, I REALLY need the temp gauge/fuel gauge unit.
I just need it to test it in my car to see if it's whats causing the incorrect temperature readings. I can mail it back to you same day I use it.
Please let me know if you could help.
