Default Short throw, who makes a good one

I was thinking about a short throw shifter kit for my 944 since there is oooo much slooop in my existing shifter, and was informed that doa short throw kit replaces all the worn parts...or how can i fix the sloop in my shifter, anyoffer a regular kit? -Chris

Well the slop in the shifter is either caused by a worn bushing or worn out shift rod. SpeedForceRacing makes a shorted shift rod which comes with bushing. This essentially fixes your slop problem and gives you shorter throw all in one shot. This allows you to also use a aftermarket **** and boot. If you want to retain the stock look, you can go with the Authority shoftshift kit, which changes the linkages to the tranny to shorten the throw.

The 951 i was looking at a few weeks ago had this problem. The shifter had almost 1-2 inches of slop while in gear!

I believe new shifter are like $45... Paragon has them.

Personally I don't want a shifter the makes the **** father from the streeting wheel. I find the realationship between the two to be perfect now and shorter lever will distrub that.

Be sure and also check the wear inside the shift rod. If it's really worn down like mine was even a new shift lever won't take up all the slop. I ended having to ream out the shift tube and use the 924 nylon bushings; at least it eliminates all metal-to-metal contact and the bushings are cheap and replaceable; now the shifts are nice and "clicky". I always thought the transaxle short shift kit and stock lever would be a good combo. You would have the same shifter height but a much shorter throw at the shifter end.

Yeah, I don't like having to reach down so far to get to the shifter. I actually have shift-**** a little higher than normal. And the APE shoft-shift kit is great because it's adjustable.

I'm a big fan of the APE short shift...
Once my car is in one piece again you can feel it out if you want.

ok.. so.. My shifter has at least that 1-2 inches of play side to side in each gear. Is that what you are talking about? Sometimes I have to adjust it so that it doesn't make a vibrating sound or something...

I bought a shgort shift kit from Autothority about 12 years ago and it's still going strong. It's the same hiem joint constructiuon as other kits I've seen though. I also shortened the shift by about 1 inch and like being able to shift without taking my elbow off the console door. The feel reminds me of a Formula Ford...

Do you have to really lay the shifter on it's side to get into 1st or reverse? If so you might need a new shift lever. If the top rotates left and right in place you need to fix it. It's easy to pull the boot and check the fit, only takes a few minutes. I've done 3 lever repairs so far and I think this is the best long term solution:

there are some.....other ways of getting a tight shifter. this one involved drilling, tapping, and a rollerblade bearing! yes, i sometimes resort to some strange engineering methods
