Default Wife wants Touareg: opinions requested

Well,
My wife wants the Touareg.

We can't swing buying it new unless we get the V6, which has a miserable weight:torque ratio (about 22 pounds / ft.lb torque).
So I'm looking at last year (2004) low-milage V8 models - which have slightly better weight to torque ratios.
I'm not towing in the immediate future, but we do lots of outdoor activities and will be moving TWICE in the next 18 months, having a baby, and carting those *&^@# animals (dogs and cats) everywhere we go.

Anybody have an opinion on the touareg, or personal experience with it?

Also, I'm going to post the BMW 323i (sport and premium package) for sale in the purely OT forum - which maybe is where this should go too, except that the members that frequent THIS forum are the personalities I'm most familiar with, so your opinions are most useful.
Here's the BMW FS link:

And here's a direct link to some info and pics on the car:

TIA.

Other than a few bugs, I've heard nothing but completely positive things about the Toureg. I'd say find a gently used V8 and let someone else eat the depreciation.

A few months back my wife and I were looking at SUV's

She liked the t-egg and the cayenne, but they were way too expensive new and not too many used ones around yet. We ended up finding a 2003 Mercedes-benz ML320 in near pristine condition factory certified. Picked that up instead. We really like it as it as the right balance between truck ruggedness and car like comforts. The 3.2 V6 is not power house, but enough to move it around 215 hp and 225 ft lbs torque. It has been getting 19 mpg and with 5 spd auto has enough flexibility to run well on mountain climbs in spite of its heavy weight.

The T-egg is new car for sure, but my wife is pretty happy with the ML. Seems like ML is little classier, but then again you want to really like what you purchased just to keep you from second guessing.

Oh.. drop a line in the Cayenne forum as much the T-egg and Cayenne are much the same and more than one Cayenne owerer cross shopped the T-egg

Have you thought about the Acura MDX? I have heard very good things.

22 lb/hp isn't the end of the world (don't forget that a 944 NA is only ~ 20 lb/hp), but I agree with clangjr about looking for a nice used V8.

After thinking it over, I doubt we'll be able to swing the V8 for now, and I'm really in to the idea of being able to haul lots of heavy stuff.
And by my computation, the 83 Euro is just under 18:! pounds:ft.lbs torque.
Maybe I'm off a bit.

What makes you think you need an SUV for outdoor activities?

A ststaion wagon holds more and uses a lot less gas.

^Let me cast another vote for a wagon.

You would not believe how much scheiss I can put in the back of my 325i. The cargo area may not be huge, but it can accommodate a 10-inch subwoofer, a Labrador retriever, and a full-size cooler full of beer all at the same time ...and for the price of that VW you could get AWD (I wouldn't bother) and every worthwhile option.

Yeah, and you can blind those stupid MF'ers in the 944's in front of you as drive at night well.

So- That's a bonus.

I absolutely HATE the Acura and Nissan SUV's for just that reason. Sure, YOU can see fine, wait until you blind oncoming traffic. It's a freaking hazard man.

Get a Toureg.

The better half of the family drives an Lexus RX300. It gets 21+ hwy mpg. Nice driving SUV for hauling kids, groceries, trips etc. not for off road.

Default The lower end Cayenne is coming...

I believe the lower end Cayanne is coming. It will have a Porsche tweaked version of thw VW V-6. About 40 extra horses. I understand it will cost around $36K.

I have a BMW X5 and love it. But if I were in the market, I would seriously consider the Toureg with the VR6. I had a Passat with the 2.8 VR6 and it was the absolute best engine I've ever experienced. The Tourareg uses a larger and more efficient version.

I would buy the new V6 Toureg over a used V8. If you can get a manual transmission that would be even better.

FYI, the v6 in the Toureg is NOT the VR6. It's a 3.2l and to my knowledge does not use the VR designation.
