Because I have an exhaust leak, so I think I'll be pulling those studs pretty soon. I've never pulled studs before, so I'm plenty nervous about it.

Hey, I wouldn't worry.. Although I do know my engine has been replaced semi recently... but the studs came out real easy.. Heat the head a litttle around the studs (not directly on them) and they should turn out real easy. Most of my nuts came out with the stud rather than off of it.

I ran across this post because today I found a broken stud on My #2 cyl with a heck of an exhaust leak.
Great job and man... were you lucky.
I'm afraid to pull my manifold in case others break so heres my fix.
Works well and no leaks. Its the same concept we use to mount fixtures or
parts on a mill. I'll plan to fix it right when I have to remove the manifold.

ermm.. That's nifty. But I wouldn't trust that. If you take it of the road for the winter, try getting the rest of them out. They shouldn't be stuck. the metal is soft, I don't think they will be stuck. heat them before you take them out and don't put too much force on them. maybe give them a tap with a hammer first. I bet that job you did wont last too long, or may cause you to break the other stud. just a warnining, these things aren't strong.

ok, I managed to strip the head with one of my studs. AARRRR, not like me.

I got the helicoil (8x1.25) correct if wrong, and just want to know if I have to pull the manifold since the helicoil tap is larger. I would think that I can use the manifold to guide both the drill and tap.
By the way, I have a pneumatic 90 degree drill that fits in there.

If you have room you should be ok. Mark your drill with tape to show the proper depth. The head is aluminum and will drill fast. You dont want to drill through. Just see if the tap will fit in the manifold hole. If it does, the you could do it in place.
