This sounds pretty normal to me for idling. The real question is what is the guage at when at cruising speed? It should be down at the first white line.

I swapped my thermostat for a 160 degree from NAPA. The car barely hits the middle when sitting still now.

I put an 80 degree thermostat in mine and it still creeps up to that line when I'm stopped at a long red light. At cruise it does stay at the first white line. I do think my fan switch needs replaced. They act goofy once in a while.

Brett - I don't know anything about your car personally - does the A/C work? If so, the "snowflake" will make the fans run non-stop, but that's because the A/C will naturally heat up your engine anyway. You could be defeating the purpose of running the fan.

Maybe try the low-temp switch? It's cheap, and easy.

Good luck to you. When you say "by Saturday" I'm guessing you'll be at the fest? If so, I look forward to meeting you.

Dale.

how much work is involved in installing a low-temp switch?

Its on clarks garage for you. In addition to what they say, I suggest buying some teflon tape and putting some wraps on the threads to prevent leaks.

Oh and Cass, remove your thermostat (the big one in the waterpump, the one that involves the fscking snap ring). My symptoms were/are just like you describe. The car heats up to the top white line and sits there, no matter what youre doing. Remove the thermostat and either leave it out or put a whole new one in if you want.

Its actually under the "T"s

http://clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/cool-05.htm

Edit: And I managed fine without removing the fan assembly. It can be done with the fans in with some creative use of extensions and universal joints, but it takes a it of patience.

Some other items to check:

- Fan relay
- Number of blades on fans - any broken?
- Stopped up radiator
