Default Accelerator / pedal extender

Recommendations please for best accelerator/pedal extender to ease the reach for heal and tow. I am only looking for accelerator extender, nothing fancy, just very funtional for all types of street and track driving. Plus with easy installation.

I've seen Redline, and that seems to be ok, but wanted to get your experience/suggestions.

Thanks.

I really can't believe people feel the need for these things. They are unnecessary.

That said, the pedals I have for my race car have it, but that was the only way they came, otherwise I wouldn't have bought them that way.

Default pedal extender

Do you actually use your heel or do youy just kind of roll your foot and blip the throttle? I ended making my own and it works great. I just cut the basic shape from a 1/4" aluminum bar that was about 4" wide and found some adhesive paper that they use of boats for a no slip step. Work great but may be a bit more than you want to do. It just took a little bit of time.

Sort of a combination of the two. The ball of my foot is firmly and fully on the brake pedal. Braking must get done and done properly. If you don't get your rev matching done, but get your braking done, you'll live. If you get your rev matching done and don't get your braking done, you might not.

I crank my foot over so my heel is on the throttle and roll my ankle to blip.

Thx for the replies.

Geo, I need the pedal extention as my foot is too narrow to easily blip when rolling the ball of my foot from brake to gas pedal.

Nah, you can do it. It just feels funny for a while when you start. It takes some training of your ankle because it's not a natural movement for your ankle. But racers and enthusiasts have been doing it for years without "training wheels."

Narrowness of a foot is not an issue. You should be cocking your foot so the ball is firmly and fully on the brake and the heel on the throttle. You blip by turning your ankle not pressing with your heel. You also should not put your foot partially on the brake and partially on the throttle. Your foot should be fully on the brake. Your priority during heel and toe is braking. Rev matching is barely important compared with getting your braking done.

Yesterday during the AMLS race they have a foot cam that was absolutely wonderful. The camera was under the seat and it showed proper heel and toe beautifully.

I have the Vosstek track pedals in my car. The throttle pedal is wider, but there is also an extention that kinda pokes out at the bottom and protrudes underneath the brake pedal. NOT GOOD. For autocross or DE, you can easily depress the throttle when braking hard due to the location of that extension. I'm going to hack that thing off before my next event.

For the heel-and-toe rolling of the foot, the Vosstek pedal does help, but I suppose now that I've learned how to do it, I really don't need the wider pedals.

Just my $0.42,
-Z-man.

As others have pointed out, stock pedals work fine for heel-toe. Just keep the foot at around 45 deg angle, so that the toes are on the brake and the heel on the gas. The hard part is to keep a fixed presssure on the gas while releasing the brake!
Also the choice of shoes makes a difference. Hint: sandals nor workshoes are not the best choice.

^Hey Stan944...were you wearing mukluks in the event pictured in your avatar?

I have yet to get comfortable heel-and-toeing my car (although I have had only a few drives in it)...I find the throttle too deep in the footwell. Actually the arrangement works great if I stand on the brakes while downshifting but approaching stoplights I end up looking like a boob. That Porsche racing heritage shining through...? For day-to-day schlepping I have resorted to angling my foot to the outside so the ball of my foot is on the brake and my toes blip the throttle. I'll try angling the foot in the opposite direction you suggest...

Probably not. No mukluks since the caribou are gone.

boffam & Peckster: mukluks?, no - Nordica ski boots.
Seriously, you'd be surprised how much you can learn about handling of your car during a day of autox in snow/ice conditions!
I'd venture saying:
s n o w / i c e - there is no substitute

We'll see just how good a winter car the S2 is come December! That winter autox looks like fun alright. Where was it held?

boffam:
My local club WOSCA runs events all year round, and the event in my avatar took place in Woodstock. There might be some other CNAC clubs closer to you.
Some info on clubs in Ontario can be found in:
http://racing.kos.net/soloforums

S2 should do fine, although expect to be beaten severely by Subaru's...
I ran on all season tires. If I get enough money, would like to put dedicated winter tires (Blizzak or Yokohama Guardex).

mo - I appologize for hijacking the thread...

Geo is right. The foot cam was great. It was amazing to watch that guy work his feet. I forget who the driver was though. I thought that was such a great shot but it feels so funny to do that. When I went through the Panoz school they seemed to think that either method was acceptable. You do have to be careful though, cause you can hit the gas and the brake at the same time if you just roll your foot over. I imagine like anything though it just takes practice.

Tonight I was tyring to just get the feel of using my ball of my foot on the brake and the heel on the gas. My wife didn't really have much of an appreciation for my efforts.
