Unhappy HELP!!! No Gears!!

Hey guys,

I got a coolant leak near a hose that was spilling coolant. I made an appointment to get it fxed, but the part kept on being the wrong one, but I was told it was still driveable as long as I made sure I kept coolant in it - so I did (kept a spare gallon in the back of my car.)

Well, about 2 weeks of doing this, my clutch would only come up from the floor about 1 inch, this happened for about 3 days, on the 3rd day, it just went back to working normal, I called and asked the shop and they said there probably was an air bubble in the line??

Well, a few weeks later, I was driving and lost the gears in the shifter, it was like the **** wasnt connected or something, after trying to get a gear, I finnally got it to go into 2nd and drove home slowly. Its in neutral in my garage now waiting for an appointment to be looked at. The shop said it might have lost a bolt or something?

Any ideas?!

Thanks!

Same thing happened to me. Turns out the shift lever fell off the linkage (it was worn from the 18 years of shifting). Pull up your shift **** boot and check that thing first. It should be connected to a little black lever thing.

When this happened to me i thought my transmission went. THe **** would just go in every direction freely. Since you got it in 2nd, methinks the lever just fell off.

If you can get under the rear end, look on drivers side, Where the linkage connects to the gear box. There is a bolt that can get loose/come out. Mine was real loose and shifter felt "very sloppy" even after replacing the bushing. Was almost impossible to get it into/out of gear.

If you have a Haynes manual it is shown on page 125 fig 2.3 (at least this was MY issue, yours could be completely different )

Never drive around in a car with a coolant leak I don't care what the mechanic told you!! That needs to be addressed quickly, while your driving you have no idea where the fluid level is at. I won't be surprise when you finally do bring it to the shop that there is more damage!!

Good Luck!

Default Hey, thanks!

Thanks guys,

It isnt the rear one, I have already checked that one out, It is probably the link under the shifter, I have NO idea how to take that off and look???

And YES, I realize that I shouldnt have driven it with the coolant leak, but the shop told me it would be ok if there was ALWAYS coolant in the res...I kept a gallon of coolant in the back seat and I checked it every day, sometimes more than once when it was driven awhile - it never got below the res..... I should have just parked it I know....

well, i would say to take the boot off a late car at least

pull up on the leather boot, there is a snap ring around the outside edge on the consule.

PUll it up and unclip the bottom of the shifter ****, you will see, from there its pretty explanitory.

One of the rare times the simple fix that comes from the first couple replys on your first thread on this list works....

Count your blessings!!!

hey the 16 year old little bastard called this one. Wheres my credit?

I would make sure you have a way of keeping the lever in there. I thought my problems were done when i put it back in, but the level was so worn out it kept falling back off. Especially at the worst of times.
