Default battery cable fire

Just had a battery cable failure/fire on the main cable from the battery to the starter. For the other power leads hooked to the sides of the positive terminal, what harness part number is that? This is on a 1992 968 manual.

This is the harness I am referring to

That sucks, hopefully the other parts of the car are in OK shape after that.

I can't speak to the part number but I'd be happy to make you up a new one with some large gauge welding cable. I'd want to copy the original but I'm happy to help help out, if you'd like.

Cheers

Appreciate the offer! I can get the main harness from the battery to the starter easy enough, i'ts all the other power leads that branch off of that (and are a separate harness) that I am truly concerned about. I'm still checking into all the options at this point. I'll DM you if this is the direction I go. Will keep the thread updated as this progresses.

Default Fire

Try 944 online. They helped me with a totally new harness for the front of my 1983 . It was for the headlight motor, coil, front end lighting and horns. I believe yours may be an “engine” harness. However, mine also included the 3 heavy gauge red wires going from the positive battery cable into the fuse and relay panel. Hope this helps some. Stand by for a dash pull.😢

Be sure to find where the short to ground is before replacing the cable/s.

My best guess is it was directly at the point where the positive cable to the starter goes through the clamp. That is where it melted in two and started the mini fire.

Ah, there should be a P clamp there to manage the cables, on top of the battery hold down plate (of which 75% are installed upside down).
Were the cables pinched below the battery hold down plate?

Default Cables

Can you show where the cable clamp is located? Down by the starter or up in the battery box?

Gage,

That is my guess, either was pinched, or perhaps the positive cable insulation was old and flaked off to cause the short to ground there. It welded part of the p clamp to the hold down plate!

Tiger,

The clamp Gage is referring to is in the battery box and sits directly on top of the hold down plate. The M8 nut secures both the clamp and the hold down plate.

Was it the original battery cable that went up?
