Here is the pic from right after I got back from Cali. It still had the plates on it.
Its an '84 that now has 85K on it. The timing belt(s) and water pump were done less than 10K ago, along with an "ok" paint job and new tires. It will need a clutch soon and the interior is a little baked. I didn't know to look for the rear hatch separating from the frame problem and didn't discover it until I was on the road and the glass was rattling.




Anyway, the first order of business was to take out the non-working 15+ year old Kenwood tape deck and put in a CD player. I picked up an Eclipse at the local Tweeter. I hope it will be an alright unit, but right now I'm a little puzzled.


The FAQ's talk about a 6-pin harness that has 2 larger pins and 4 smaller ones. One of the large pins is a brown ground, and the other is the Acc +12v. The issue is that the installer of the Kenwood tape HU must have cut off the connector. The puzzling part is that a constant 12v and the 2 other wires are not too be found. Its almost like the FAQ is for newer car and not applicable for my '85. There doesn't seem to be another harness for an EQ option either.

Is there an easy place to tap for the constant +12v? Also my Haynes manual shows that (and I'm assuming about the polarity here) the negatives for each side are joined somewhere. I've confirmed this with the ohm-meter but I cannot figure out were this would be... Is the solution pull new wire to the doors?

Anybody have some pointers?

If you get a Haynes manual it has some fairly good wiring diagrams.
Perhaps that could help.

I just installed a new deck myself, and the previous Blaupunkt CD deck had been spliced into etc... the previous owner even cut the antenna cable and spliced it.

Anyway, way in the back, there should be 2 hot wires, one thats off the battery (fat one ) and one thats off the ignition ( red w/ stripe I think )
The fat brown one is ground, and all the speaker wire are brown with some sort of stripe. There is also a wire going to the power antenna, if it works (early 85-late 85's had windshield antenna)..

The Haynes manual wasn't very helpfull, but using a probe ( simple thing that lights up ) you can find the hot ones.

I have additional things just plugged into open relay spots to get 12V and GND...

I should take pics for others when I find it. I'll get out the test light tomorrow and probe the possibilities.

I'm looking forward to driving this car. It my first rear wheel drive car, and already I do notice the difference.

My other 'baby' is a '92 Maxim SE. I've done about $2K worth of suspension mods (parts only I do my own worK). Its a great car, and it seats 4 so its not going anywhere soon.

Here is a pic of the 2, No one would know it, but the Max used to be an Auto. I converted it to 3 pedals...

There should be a wire in there somewhere that was the stock constant 12v. It should have a really narrow connector. It might be easier to run a new wire from the clock. It has a constant 12v. This just suppiles radio with a small current to keep the memory intact.

IIRC, the grounds for the speakers are tied together at the radio. Each of the speakers have two wires running to them. On my 83 there was an outboard fader on the console. There were L, R, and Gnd wires to the fader. The speaker wires ran from the fader to each of the speakers.

The diagrams you need are from the factory manual. I believe the constant power wire is the white with green spiral stripe, though I'm not 100% on that one.

Personally, I don't use Haynes/Chiltons... anyone who mistakenly translates "tempostat" into "thermostat" shouldn't be trusted as a viable info source on Porsches IMHO

Yes, an FSM would be awesome. Where is the best place to get such a beast? Are they even available for a reasonable price? I've seen references to a CDROM...

I put an Eclipse unit in mine and have been real happy with it so far. I'm sure you can locate a constant 12v somewhere on the fuse box. The clock power lead should do it too.

Consider this free. Dont cut the stock wiring harness. Contact www.crutchfield.com and buy a 15 dollar aftermarket harness. It just plugs in to both new and old. Well worth the money,
