Default Painting Taillights.........

Ok, I LOVE the way black taillights look on yellow cars. Pete, I know that you've painted your taillights red, did you get some sort of halogen white bulb for the reverse light? Are there red bulbs I can get for brake lights if I decide to paint the taillights black? What paint should I use, Pete what paint did you use?

Also, anyone have pictures of what they've done to their tailights?

Thanks!!

Beats me. I just painted the lenses with Testors Transparent Red. I just gave the turn signal and reverse lights 2 very light coats. The reverse lights are a little pink now but it doesn't bother me.

Do any of your posts help people?

And have you even opened one of them? Because of the 25+ I've read, everyone wants red. Red and black are very different, hence my thread..

Well, his avatar kinda makes me hungry but then so does yours.

There was a guy at the 944 Fest last year that had black smoked front turn signals and front sidemarkers.I can't remember his name but his license plate was "FAST 951"
If he sees this maybe he'll chime in.

EDIT- Forget that. He did his front lights in red also. His plate was "IFLY944"
Here's a pic:

There are plenty of threads on this subject. But you do not want to paint your red lenses black unless you want to be rear ended. You also don't want a red bulb to try and shine through all those filters. One on the bulb, the original red plastic and then the black paint. You would need a very high watt halogen bulb to do the trick and that would probably end up melting the lens housing if you stood on the brakes for long.

This is a bad idea to try on a stock tail light. You really need to start over from scratch if you want a black out lens on our cars.

IceShark - as the lighting expert on the board - what is your opinion of Black tail lights on a yellow *track* car. Brake lights are required, and I usually race in bright sunlight. However, I don't need to worry about state inspection or soccer moms. Its probably an irreversible mod, so I'd hate to do it if its not going to work. If I could get some reasonable light out of brake lights painted black, it would be fine. What do you think? I'll also send you a PM in case you don't catch this post...

You can get a set of rear taillights on ebay for like 20 bucks, Why not do that and have a set to experiment with?

DFASTEST951 has smoked rear lenses, go to powerhaus.com and click on hot to see pics.

I dont think it looks good at all, and why would you want to lessen the intensity of brake lights I have no idea...

Sam - I hadn't seen any pics and the Powerhaus link looks like it just has a side view. It's just a thought at this point.
I'll probably paint the reverse and the amber lights red...

There is a special paint just for this. It's a smoke-colored paint that is basically a transparent dark gray. Something similar to this is what you are looking for IIRC:
