I'm going to be painting mine black as well, along with the side markers. However, I want to get a set of used taillights to experiment with as I want to put in LED's. They're much brighter and I can get them in the color I want. ANyone have a set of taillights (cracked lenses are okay!) they want to donate to the cause?

Michelle, LEDS are not going to work so great in the OEM lens, much less one that is smoked.

But you can experiment and find out for yourself.

To produce a suitable readable light you will have to have quite a few led's. As led's are more directional than ambient. Plus, findiing the appropriate mcd/volts/applying ohms law.

Michelle, As flamingeye sort of pointed out in English, it is lens frenzeling and reflector design of the OEM unit. The LEDs have this narrow light beam as he said which is pretty hard to solve in the stock lens unit.

Both I and Perry951 have tried this out with the best LEDs made in the world and it won't work very well with stock.

I have nothing against LEDs and pulled the red lens out of the third eye brake light and put in a 4x10 (40 individual LEDs) red LED array that is usually sold for emergency vehicle light bars. It works OK, but side visability is not so good unless the hatch glass is dirty and catches the light. If I hadn't gotten the thing for free to test out I would be sort of pissed with the results. So, be prepared for a let down if you do it anyway.

You want to go with a filament bulb, which I would suggest, I've got some extra 35 watt halogens on hand if you want to test them out. They are 6.75 each.

No, flaming, I'm sorry, no need to apologise. You have to point the basic problems out in simple terms to people that haven't gone through all this. That is all I was trying to do for Michelle and tell her not to go that way, as you were also doing.

Michelle,

Red taillights look just as good on a black 951.
Try painting the turn signals, and the side markers for a complete look, with the testors paint.

Here is what the back looks like in red Testors on my black car. Note you can't really see the third eye brake light with the red lens removed and LED array installed. If the brakes were on you could. Picture doesn't show everything so well, as it is a TS and the bumper pads are removed. But you get the idea.
