Windshield Wiper Motor Alternative: VW Rabbit/Golf
Hi All,
It's nothing new that the wiper motor is nla and/or silly expensive and not all old motors can be refurbished.
Mine is still working, but getting a little slow, especially with the slightly longer modern wipers that I had before. Hence I decided to get a new motor.
I followed the excellent write-up on the German forum. I only wish to extend that write-up a little bit!
Procedure:
1. Get the Mk3 Rabbit/Golf wiper motor, part number: 1J0955119. (I got a Febi/Bilstein one for 24 Euros.)
This motor has 5 connectors and has two speeds, just like the original early 944. Hence same functionality.
Note: the factory motor had an M6 nut to hold the linkage arm, the new one needs an M8!
2. Get the matching connector, part number:171971835A. (I ordered from China for cheap.)
2.a However, they did not fit great (they would still work, though) so I designed mine. You'll find it on OnShape. It's also not perfect but it works.
3. Remove the old motor. It is huge and heavy in comparison to the new one!
The new motor housing, however, interferes with the side of the wiper mechanism. So you have two options here:
a) If you have a dremel tool, you do not have to remove the wiper mechanism!
b) If you don't, then remove the cabin air fan, the wiper blades (mark their positions with painter's tape beforehand), then the whole linkage.
4. Then you need to cut out the interfering part. See the picture below.
5. Transfer the ground wire from the old motor to the new one.
6. Reassemble everything.
7. Chop off the old connector. Try to leave as much wire as you can, because the reach is not that easy.
Crimp on the 2.8 mm female pins, place them in the connector. Order the wires as follows:
Start from the wiper motor itself:
black-gray
green-yellow
green
black-green
brown
See also the picture below
8. Connect to the motor.
9. Add some quality new wiper blades. I used slightly longer ones to further improve visibility. I used 22" on the driver and 20" on the passenger side (VALEO HYDROCONNECT 578576 & 578574).
10. Start enjoying the rainy days as well!
Great to hear about this! Thanks for posting! I’ve been wondering what to do about the wiper motor and a replacement for it. Like yours, mine is slow, but still works. Looks a lot better…does it increase the wiper speed a lot?TIA!😀

It's hard to make a good video of this, but I've tried!
Video looks great! This motor as far as speed and size/weight looks like an excellent upgrade!😀 Where did you get the molex connectors and plug housing? I have a very hard time depinning these connectors even with good? tools. Been about 99% bad luck with female multi pin plugs like this.TIA😀
See points 2 & 2a in the OP. There are links in there. You can order from aliexpress or 3D print my version which you can find on OnShape. Neither is perfect, both will work.I used the female blade recepticles from the aliexpress package.
My son has an early model 1985 944 project car we are restoring that was missing the wiper motor and several other essential parts.
I have been researching a viable replacement and appreciate this write up. In addition to the above info has anyone looked into a harness offered on Ebay that connects to a Bosch wiper motor that fits up to a modern Cayman? Ill post some more info on the Ebay listing for the harness and Bosch motor number identified in that listing shortly.
Any additional info would be great. Lets keep thos thread going!!

Looks like a very similar great option, but man, the price for just that cable is... hard to swallow. (And you need to double it to get it to Europe.)
For the price I can replace the Rabbit motor many times over and I don't have the old connector dangling around in the engine bay, getting wet in rain. You don't have to cut the harness, though, that's always nice. The same solution is of course possible with the Rabbit motor, "just" need to find a source for that black plug to go on the oem connector. Or take it from your old motor, like in the original German write up.
