URGENT! Struts
This might be a newbie question, but...
Are the 944 front struts oil filled and prone to leak? I doing my t-belt right now, and i need to know so i dont open up my cam housing for nothing. Thanks.

The leak is either from the struts or the cam housing because i have oil on my control arm.
Either A. my struts leak
Or B. I have a slow leak in my cam housing (which has a little oil residue around it) which is leaking onto the control arm, adn then somehow getting on my strut.
However, now that i did a search, i know that struts leak, and thats most likely the case.
Thanks.

My struts leaked, when I removed the struts form the housings, the housing was full of fluid, cause the strut sprung a leak, but none ever leaked onto the ground or out of the housing itself....And remeber this was on ane early car...might make a little difference with the story....

Burning Brakes
Serge, ah, now I understand. I had leaking power steering fluid on the control arms. It leaked from a loose clamp on the bottom of the reservoir and run down the side of the engine compartment wall and dripped on the control arm.
When you're doing your t-belt, I would take the cam housing off too and replace all the front seals. It'll take you an extra hour and $70 but lots of piece of mind. Then on to those struts...

Can you tell by the look and smell of the fluid? P/S fluid is easy to spot, when a strut leaks the shaft should be wet under the boot and not smell burnt, motor oil is tough to spot if it's fresh. Just wipe a spot on a clean paper towel. Then again, it is a Porsche and all 3 sources could be leaking.
I've got 2 different types of strut compressors if you need them.

Race Car
Everything leaks from the passenger front. The power steering, camtower, oil cooler, balance shaft seal, oil sender, OPRV, front cam O-ring, cam seal, etc all can leak from there. Pressure spray the whole area (when the car is cool or it may crack your exhaust manifold) and look for fresh leaks.

Anyways, while aligning my balance shafts (stupid vibration) I ended up doing my belts as well. They only had 15k miles on them, but the timing belt looked really glazed. I didnt do any of the other stuff, as all the rollers were fine and seals were done a little before i aquired the engine (hence the alignment problem with the balance shafts). Well, i revved the engine up in the garage and the vibration seems to be gone...once i shower off all this grease, im gonna take it out for a run.
Btw, i managed to put the power steering belt back on before the alternator belt 2 times in a row! Frekin agrivating.
