Vin and various identification clarifications I could use some input on
Howdy, note this thread is purely just for gathering useless information that is neat to know, anyways ( long paragraph about nonsense)
I’ve been on and off for a little while trying to decipher some stuff about my vin and the origins of my 944, so far I’ve had a few websites quote me with “ the serial number is after the 4 and the id number for the engine, and others stating different answers. The closest I’ve gotten so far to possibly id’ing my cars true production number came from a forum that was made in 05’, which claimed the last 4 digits or some grouping like that are the “ serial number “ however I found this most likely untrue as my 944 is an 83’ us market with a reported serial number of 6379, however only 5506 where sold in 1982 ( 1983 model year )
is there any forms of deciphering the vin to find which number my 944 was on the production line or is this a lost cause
thank yall for anyone who provides input as this is rather useless to know but still kinda cool
also attached is the only decoder that I found including a serial number

Find your data plate under the hood. That will give you a month and year, if that helps.
Perhaps in '83 both the 924s and 944s were rolling down the same assembly line thus your serial number can be higher than the total of 944s built?
Just a guess..

thank you, my guess could be something like that, I know my dates state 12/82 and my vin confirms that with the lettering for 83’ model years so i definitely know it’s an 83. The part I do know for certain is it has to be the numbers at least after the last 4, as the “ 944 “is split up thru out the vin All I’ve been able to narrow down to is “ when it was produced “ from a vin website, of which I’m not sure is true considering it also told me it was originally moss green ( it’s not and was never ) and has 6 cylinders lol,
( the website says it was finished on 17/12/82 )
either way I’ll check some places to research that Theory as I hadn’t thought of that yet, thank you !
You might want to reach out to @jeff968 ; he's quite knowledgeable about VIN interpretation and may be able to help you out. I don't know if you can send PMs yet but maybe he'll see that he was tagged over here and can jump in. Otherwise, he's active over in the 968 forum.
Hi, although I can't speak to 944 data I can tell you about 968s. I have been collecting 968 data for almost 30 years. As for your main question I would not be able to answer it for a 968 and I would guess the same for the 944. The reason is that Porsche uses multiple VIN series for the same car lines. For the 968s we have:
800### for ROW coupes
815### for ROW CS coupes
820### for North American coupes
830## for ROW cabs
840### for NA cabs
Within these VIN series there is a #1, #2, #3, but these cars were produced together so as far as the production line, there is no way to tell who was #1, #2, or #3. There is a body number as well but that doesn't help because they are all over the place.
FYI, for 968s Porsche always reserved the first 60 VINs so #61 was the first one of the VIN series.
