Purchasing a 944

Purchasing a 944
Hi again. We've owned 2 Porsches over the last 15 years, a 944 and a 996. Both great cars.
I'd love to buy a Porsche of my own, and have noticed that a 944 is most affordable.
Between drivers ed and various sports, I don't have the time to get a job to earn some $$.
I've looked on the internet and found 944s for less than $6000. Currently I have found a 1987 Turbo on Cars.com for 5800. I'd love to get it now, but know I can't. My parents have said that I may be able to get one, but does anyone have any ideas on convincing them to let me get one now and pay them when I get the money.
If anyone could help or knows about a 944 similar too:
Preferably $6000 or lesss
CAR MUST HAVE AIRBAGS!!!! (one of my parent's rules, a good one)
Since it must have airbags, it must be a 1987 Turbo/S or older.
Thanks,
Matt

Be careful on a $6000 or less turbo, that is a borderline price between a nice car and crap. Generally $8000 seems to be the figure to pay to get a good 120k driver that needs nothing major. $10,000 would be for a very nice one with good receipt record, nice paint and interior, etc. A $6000 you'd would have to be very careful you get a good one.
I would suggest a 944 S, that car would suit all your requirements well. $6000 or less, airbags, very nice power (not too much), etc.

The problem with older airbags is the willingness to deploy at the right time- If at all. They do become unreliable as they age- just what I've heard I can't back that up..
A 944S would be a good choice. Keep a healthy stash of cash for maintenance. The Turbo would of course require more..

You will need an 87 and newer car to get airbags. If money is an issue I disagree with the S recommendation, as maintenance and potential failure is MUCH higher.
You should be able to get a very nice 2.7L 944 (MY89) for that 6-7K range.

The only 944's I've seen with airbags are 87 and up turbo's and all S2's. I've never seen an S or an NA with bags. Dan (xsboost) has an 89 NA and it doesn't have airbags.

I learn so much from you guys!!!!
S2 for Melissa for the airbag option!
I have decided to get my 944 from Power Tech in Rockaway, NJ on recommendation from here. Reid the pre-owned manager is looking for the car I asked for. I gave him QUITE the list of what I want from what I learned fom you folks. I am going with a "dealer" rather than privately because I don't want the hassle of getting rid of the Baja privately. This way I can trade it in. Even if I only get money enough to pay the loan off, hassle factor is WAY lower. I know I'll pay a little more at a dealer than privately, but that is the only viable option at this point for me.
Glad I read about the airbags on here. Good news is as my daily driver I will be only putting 10-12 K on the car a year rather than the initial 15-17K I thought. But still that is a lot of time in the car...airbags are a must for me with all that time on the road with commuting idiots!
Thanks Guys!

Some of the materials used to inflate the bags, such as nitrocellulose, have a shelf-life of 10 to 15 years. Many older cars (like ours) will have a sticker someplace with the suggested airbag replacement date.
About the only thing that I would consider air bags good for in these cars is the insurance discount. I would not depend upon one to deploy during an accident. With that said, make sure you wear your seatbelt!
Matt, best of luck with your search..and welcome to the board!
