Default A/C Air Cleaner - $450 ????

I have the "grill" that mounts onto the bottom of the A/C blower located under the passenger side of the dash. However, according to my mechanic there should be a "filter" that is inside the grill, that apparently is missing. According to PETS the grill/air cleaner assembly is part # 477 820 907, and it sells for about $450 through Paragon or Pelican.

Any idea if this filter is necessary to keep dust and contaminants from getting into the A/C blower, and presumably blowing into my face? Any suggestions on what to use for filter material, or how I can do this without spending $450? Again, I have the grill housing, just the filter material is missing. Thanks.

KLA sells an additional filter that goes on the intake side, otherwise I've seen people cut up indoor A/C filters and use the media to replace their A/C filters on other cars.

Sam - I was considering cutting up a house A/C filter, but didn't know if the blower would suck up junk from it, not knowing what the original filter was made of. I'll check out KLA. Thanks.

Is this the little yellow circle filter? If so, it hardly looks worth $450!

I don't know what it originally looked like as mine is missing. I confirmed with Tom at Pelican that the filter and plastic housing is in fact $450. It looks to me like about a $15 part.

Sam - any idea what the website is for KLA so I can see what they have?

Isn't that "filter" nothing more than just an open cell sponge rubber screen, there just to keep misc. stuff from getting sucked up inside the duct work? I need to replace the one on mine also.

Ken -I didn't know if it was open cell foam or some type of micro-filtration unit. If your looks like foam, I may just get a piece of that at Home Depot or a piece of a/c filter from my house unitl.

There isn't much left inside of the units on either car of mine, but whats there does look like some type of foam screening. I don't see why a foam type replacement wouldn't work as long as air can flow thru it fairly easy.

Yea, the one I'm thinking of is a yellowish circle of spongy, foam-looking stuff about 4" across and on the bottom of the blower assembly. Mine has kind of fallen apart (it looks like it wasn't really intended to last 20-ish years) and as much of a stickler as I can be for high quality original stuff, I bet the modern day HEPA-type filters are WAY better and can be modified to fit for less than 1/20 the cost of the original "Brillo Pad". I suppose flow is an issue (you don't want to get a filter so fine as to have the blower motor burning up because it can't suck air through it), but also a more modern filter will undoubtedly be able to exceed the performance of a 1985 part.
