Default Tightening U joints on steering shaft

I am experiencing much play in my sterring wheel, which becomed worse at higher speeds. I believe that there is play in my steering shaft because whith the car sitting, engine off, I can turn the wheel slightly in both direction (about a centimeter or 2). Is there any way i can chech the steering shaft for play? Can the U Joints themselves become loose?

Thanks
Christian

I don't think there's a way to adjust them. My steering wheel had a lot of play and I ended up replacing the steering shaft completely.

Check your ball joints (both inner by the rack and outer) at the tie rod ends. Most of the time that's the problem.

Lego,

Hmm, I didn't know ball joints would cause play! My mechanich happened to mention a bad driver's side ball joint and tie rod end. As such, I bought a ball joint kit from rennbay, and tie rod ends. However I havnt had the time to do them yet.

I guess I should get in gear, and stop ***** footing.

Sounds like the steering shaft to me. I replaced ball joints and tie rod assemblies and still had that play in the wheel.

You can stick your hand down in front of the brake fluid reservoir to grasp the shaft and twist it to check for any play.

If your car has power steering, I have a nice used steering shaft that I'll sell to you cheap. PM me if you're interested.

I bought it by mistake when the eBayer said it would fit "all 944 cars 82-91." Manual shafts are about 1cm longer.

Too many possible culprits to list it - you need to find where the play is originating, while a helper is moving the steering wheel left and right withing the play.
