How to, or can you, tell if these bumper shocks are collapsed??
My side pieces on my rear bumper have never fit right. I pulled the bumper off today.
How can I tell if the shocks are collapsed or not. Both measure the same length, 12.5" I removed the rubber ends for the photos.
Thanks......

If they are collapsed you will see leaking fluid around them, or you should be able to compress them by hand. If they bust, then everything will leak out of them. They look pretty normal to me.
I am just trying to figure out how you took the shocks off without seperating them from the bumper first..

the rear shocks come right off, two 13 mm bolts each side. the little ones on the side moldings are the pesky nuts. there's plenty of room back there.
anyhow on to answering the question at hand - those shocks look fine. my rear bumper shocks are fine too, but my drivers side molding has a weird curve in it. i figure i'm just going to leave it that way, it's not falling off, and there's no crease in the paint, so its best to let sleeping dogs lie.

Those side-moldings, bumper end caps, are notorious for developing that strange curve. The front fiberglass also tends to bow out over time. Not too sure what causes this, but I've seen it on other 944s which looked to have been taken care of. Luckily, or not so luckily I guess, mine were replaced last year from a hit-and-run. Good thing I had glasses on that day and got that plate #, those end-caps are expensive!
