64c/mile after 17,500 miles. Here are the details:

http://www.weissach.net/WP0AB294XMN4...urchaseHistory

If you don't count upgrades, the cost is ~60c/mile.

Karl.

Not very realistic to include the purchase price of the cars. Just the maintenance cost is a better comparative measurement.

I think traditionally the way to calculate cost is to use depreciation of the vehicle rather than the purchase price. In that light given that the sell price of our cars is rather flat you should only calculate, maintenance and repairs, fuel, oil and insurance. I think you find the cost per mile is very low and compared to new vehicles probably in the range of a Cavalier if not less.

Obviously you both are right. I think most of us were just having fun with the numbers. However if you had no insurance and totaled it on day 1 mile 1, your CPM would in fact be the purchase price.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this. At least our cars will all have a solid service history if we ever want to sell (although I might recommend deleting the $ and cost per mile column when you're showing it. Have a good weekend, all!

I couldn't give a rat's *** what someone else arbitrarily decides my car should be worth (usually in order to encourage me to buy a new car). I would MUCH rather get an older car and put the time and care into keeping it up than eat the depreciation on a new one. Anyone who does is a fool.

Look at it this way:

A new car (even a modest one) is going to run you maybe $25K - $30K give or take. Excluding interest, over 60 months this is $416.67 a month for a "basic transportation" car. Over a year, this is $5,000. I seriously doubt more than 0.5% of the people here spend that on their cars in a year, and that's (1) not counting interest, (2) not counting insurance differences (higher premiums and the necessity to carry collision & comprehensive), (3) not counting routine service which is a significant percentage of OUR operating costs anyway on our older cars, etc.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that when you consider all factors - fuel consumption, cost outlay, insurance, and maintenance it is FAR cheaper to run one of our 944s than a "new", "efficient" vehicle. Plus it's just plain more fun.

Also, a car is NEVER an investment - it is a liability. We're talking about cutting losses here, not making money.

I 100% agree.

I actually have some recent data that doesn't support that statement (it surprised me too!).

As I'd mentioed in an earlier post, my car has cost me ~60c/mile if you don't count upgrades (see http://www.weissach.net/WP0AB294XMN4...urchaseHistory for details)

From what I can see, my costs are reasonably typical of a 100K+ mileage 944.

The Edmunds website has something called True Cost to Own (TCO)

They attempt to calculate the actual cost (which is well understood process because fleet buyers [e.g. rental car companies, etc] need to understand the costs. They've been doing this for years).

They calculate the TCO for a new Infinity G35 Coupe over 5-years to be 59c/mile. See http://www.edmunds.com/new/2004/infi...v..4.Infiniti* for details.

Now they add insurance costs which I did not because it varies so much by individual and especially here on Rennlist because of the wide range in age.

Anyway... if you remove the insurance costs from the Edmunds calculation, the cost drops to 52c/mile

So that turns out to be ~15% cheaper than my 944S2...

Karl.

PS - Why did I pick the G35 Coupe? Because its a 2+2 (like our cars) and has very similar acceleration performance to a 968. See following graph:

So ive put on 11k miles since i purchased it in late november (i was in russia for a month in december too). Whoa, thats a lot of driving!! So ive spent somewhere around 3500 including gas (and thats a lot of premium gas) and initial purchase price. 11k miles is about 900 bucks in gas. Subtract the 500 for intial purchase and 175 for shipping. Thats about 1925 in maintenance...but that includes a new engine, headgasket, radiator, etc.

1,925/11,000 = 17.5 cents per mile

Guess only Luis de Prat has me beat. The rest of you..spanked!

I agree, you have to have no life to log every mile.
