Default Check Engine Light

Hello,

Still in the process of restoring my 1989 944 2.7L. Yesterday I removed the instrument cluster to find the reason for the odometer not working. That was an easy find, the gear is simply destroyed. I ordered a new one...

At the same time, I was testing all the lights and I found that the 3 for the check engine indicator were missing. From the traces on the copper connectors, I could see that lights were there at some point. As the previous owner was relying on a somewhat really bad mechanic, I figured those could have been removed to "fix" an issue. But, I read in some threads that not all 944 models do have the check engine light. Can someone confirm that the 1989 944 base model do have the light and what is its purpose?

Thanks

Martin

Depends on the market. I imagine it's there to monitor the O2 sensors for the cats. If you don't have cats, then you probably don't have a CEL.

I think cats appeared in some markets as early as 1986? (My UK/Ireland-market '87 does not have them.)
