engine detailing (paint the cam tower?)
well, since I have the head off, I would like to do something with the cam tower. I was thinking maybe painting the script red? (black car) what other stuff? I also have the welt. strut brace that needs some paint... I can't decide, so you all get to post photos of stuff in engine bays I can do myself, for cheap! BTW, is it safe to pressure wash the engine bay with the head off? alternator and all?

I would not get any water into the block, or on the pistons or anything like that....I would just get a couple thick garbage bags, and cover the top end just to be safe....Generally when you pressure wash an engine, it should be cold, you spray the crap on it, or degreaser, let it soak for a bit, then start the car and then pressure wash while the car is running...THis helps ensure you dont create any problems....Also in the case of degreasing any engine...Hot, steaming water is key...!
I have had good luck with the green slime stuff..

It still amazes me to see the head off on these cars, you can see some much more. Like on our cars, you can see about an inch of the turbo normally but in the pic, you can see all of it. That is the first turbo car I have seen with the head off, a friend of mine as an S that has the head off.

Just spend some time with a few brushes and some brake clean.

Eyal, you could go with Perry's approach and take the whole thing out, rebuild and detail, but i doubt you want to go that far Anyway, Perry's engine is what i hope my looks half as good as.

Get some cans of some degreaser, like gunk or something...Cover the top of the engine with a couple garbage bags to ensure that water doesnt go anywhere you dont want it to....spray the degreaser and let it soak for about ten minutes....Then if you dont have a presuure washer or anything like that, just get some brushes and a bucket of some really hot water...again the hotter the water the better it breaks down the grease....That alone is the most important thing...! Dump some water on the engine and scrub away..and repeat..and repeat...ten after you have all of the grease off the engine, use some tire shine on the engine to shine up the black hoses, plastic covers, etc...but dont just spray it on and leave it...spray it on and then wipe it down..and remember take your time and start in one side of the engine and work your way around....
Also you can use brake cleaner, carb cleaner, but these chemicals arent exactly paint friendly, it probably wont take the paint off, but it will get dull, and we all know that there isnt enough paint in the engine bays of the 944 cars in the first place...why risk it...so i would try to stay away from these harsher chemicals....
And also remember to plug any vaccum lines and hoses also....and if your concerned about the floor of the area you will be doing this above, as the floor will get dirty....very dirty....again maybe put some bags down...
And to make your engine bay clean...it does not just happen in ten minutes..I remember when I did mine it took me like 3 or 4 hours...! But its clean..!
Also if you have an air compressor, this becomes very handy to blow leaves and other crap out of hard to reach areas, and to blow off any water after cleaning, but before the tire shine....as most tire shines and water dont play nicely together..
Hope this helps a little, but that is pretty much how i did mine, I would show you but I do not have any pics available here at work to post...

I'm thinking of painting the script red.... I don't know if i should paint the rest another color, or just leave it. I am also going to paint my strut brace. I don't know what color though.

If my car was black, I would paint the tower black, and then file the POrsche script on the tower...The POrsche would stand out really nicely on a black tower....and the struts, I just painted My strut housings myself...I was going to paint them that Koni color, but then I just decide to go with black, simply because you dont really see the struts, and because they will get dirty, so black was best for me....SO I would go with black and black....!

What is the brace made out of....? If its alluminum....that is great...Because just recently my buddy dought a painted used strut brace for his eclipse...well it looked like I ****, so I sanded all of the paint off, then made sure that the alluminum was bare and free of heavy sanding scratches, then again I took and buffed it for him, and it turned out awesome...! Rememeber that alluminum can be polished to a hight gloss shine with not much effort at all, as it is a softer metal....If its steel, I would paint it silver....! To bad your not close by me, cause then we could just have it chromed for a good price....!
