But they changed the offset in 87, shouldn't it be the same for 88-89 as well?

Anyway, thanks bro, I appreicate it! =)

It is the same for 87+ (though Turbo S had higher offset wheels than the other models).

The link is for PRIOR TO 1987 not 87 AND prior. It is poorly worded. The change was to accomodate larger brakes and ABS (which was not on ALL cars but was available as an option).

At any rate you should not be running a spacer, you will have to lose the center cap or the dust covers.

FWIW, Danno is running 17X10 all around if memory serves.

Again, since your wheels are very similar to my newly acquired ones, I am quite sure you can keep both the dust covers and center caps and remove the spacers by carefully machining the centering diameter deeper.

"danno is running 10s on 17s all the way around. "

Actually, I've got 17x10.5" & 17x11.5" BBS race wheels. I'm using a 255/40-17 tyre in front with no rubbing because most of the extra width is placed on the inside due to the extra 12mm of offset.

Unfortunately, I've just discovered the downside to using lightweight 17/18-lb wheels on the street. Hugged a corner too close and bumped the curb kinda hard. Now I've got a wobble on the outer rim-edge. At least it's just a lateral bend so no bumpity ride. Still trying to track down a BBS distributor to buy new rim-halves.

Ok, maybe I should say "'86 & earlier" rather than "pre-'87" to be more specific?

As for Nick's problem he's got the same offset issue as Adrial when he had 47mm offset wheels. The less-than-stock offset moves the rim & tyre-centerline outwards and places the edge closer to the fender-lip. While you can roll or grind the fender-lip, I'd keep at least 1/8" to retain some lateral strength.

Here's how I fitted some Boxster wheels to a friend's car a couple months ago:

1. grind off 3-5mm off end of spindle to match outer surface of lock-nut

2. flatten hub bearing-cap. I just heated the center up to cherry-red with a torch and smashed with a mallet. Then I doubled checked clearances by putting some clay on the inside of the cap and installing it to see how much space was between the lock-nut and cap. I reduced clearance to about 1.5mm

3. shorten hub-cap retaining legs. The clips on the hub cap that snaps into the wheel were a little longer than necessary. I used some end-nipper plyers to cut off about 1.5-2mm.

4. last idea, I thought of at the end, but wasn't necessary. That was to grind small circular grooves on the outer lip of the hub bearing-cap to make room for the hub-cap clips. Using a small circular file would've worked.

Its strange that you guys are having these problems. I have a set of 17X8.5 Boxster S wheels on the front of the 951 and they fit fine, I cannot make the tire rub (trust me I have tried). In fact I like the look so much I am going to grab a second set and run the 17X8.5 all around until I splurge in April and go to REAL big Fikse's (or similar).

That said, I do not have center caps (who needs those things?) so I dont know if they would fit or not, dont even have any to give it a try.

Danno - if you would change the wording there it might help. I have seen numerous listers sight your site (funny wording huh?) and that info while giving out wrong information. It has always been due to the way that page is worded. Too hard to comprehend, 87 and prior to most people INCLUDES 87.

Since the pivot point for camber adjustment is quite low (maybe 12" below the top of the wheel), 1 degree change in camber moves the top of the wheel .21". This is even more if camber plates are used for the adjustment.

Danno, great info on grinding the spindle. I'll look at that, when I get there.

Nick, take off the dust cap and spacer and road test it before you touch any alignment settings. Like I said I'm running the same size tire on a wider wheel and I don't have a problem.

Do you know the offset on the wheel you're using? I'll give it a try later today.

I think the offset on the fronts are 55mm. I'll have to pull one off and check.

EDIT- I just checked and the front wheels are 49mm offset.

It was close, but no interference between center cap (not shown) and the dust-cap in my case. The wheels are AT Italia (a.k.a. ATP wheels) 8x17".

and the tire (225/45x17) will likely clear the fender as well.
