Default Sony XSW4621 4x6 does NOT fit 951 w PW

Clarke's garage and several posters here mention the Sony XSW4621 4x6 speakers fit the front door locations of a 951 with PW. I just want everyone to know before they order them that the speakers simply do not fit. They do not match the factory mounting bracket, and without using the factory bracket, the factory grilles have nothing to snap on to. Unless you plan on crazy gluing the factory grills to the custom brackets, forget these speakers. Does anyone have a correct answer as to what speakers would fit the front doors. Several on here have mentioned the Blaupunkt current model is close to being a good fit. For now, I'm sticking with the factory speakers and returning the Sony's.

I have the Kenwood KFC-X468C in the front of my car... they don't sound bad for a 4 x 6, and they fit perfectly (the factory grills snapped right on.

Your factory grills snapped on? Mounting bracket? My speakers just screwed to the door along with the grills.

The factory speakers sit in a factory mounting bracket, which are both screwed into the door with the same screw. The grill snaps onto the outside of this bracket for the flush look that is original. Perhaps your speakers came with a grill that works fine, but to get the original look, you can't use an aftermarket grill or bracket.

Does anyone else have a recommendation of a speaker that sits in the bracket and also isn't too deep that it doesn't fit?

Mine are the factory original grills....what year is your 951? Perhaps they changed the design at some point. Do you maybe have the 10 speaker system?

Neither of my 944's has any bracket of any type. Just was Scootin described.

Hey mdex, do you have power windows or not? Without power windows, there seem to be some models that fit, but with power windows, crutchfield doesn't think anything will fit.

I agree with scottin. I have pioneer premire 4x6 plates in the front with power windows. The fit is great and the stock grills still work. I will see if I can find the model number for them.

I have power windows, and don't have the 10 speaker set up. We tried putting a JL 4" component in the front but they were way too deep so that is why we went with the Kenwoods... They aren't great on the mid-bass, but that is what the 6.5s in the back are for

Just ordered the Blaupunkt TSx462 speakers. I'll let everyone know how they fit when they get here.

The door speaker grilles on the early and late cars are different. My car - an '86 - had a flat plate that is held on with four screws, and the only speakers that would fit were some very cheap ones with paper cones. The later cars have a two-piece grille which provides a little more clearance. The part numbers are given in the Q & A in the Technical Section of this site for 944's. I bought all the pieces, plus a reasonable speaker about 2" deep, and it works much better.

Blau TSx462 do NOT fit an '88 944 turbo's front door. I tried all 3 brackets, the stock one and the 2 supplied but none would get the stock grill to snap on. The problem still is that the speaker itself and specifically the tweeter and outside area of the surround stick up too high and don't allow the grill to come down far enough to snap onto the back of the bracket.

All hope seems lost. This webiste and others is filled with people saying a certain speaker fits, but so far Crutchfield has been right: they don't have any that fit. This has been the most frustrating thing I've encountered in some time. Thanks again for the help so far, and I hope what I've learned doesn't have to be relearned by others when they set out to replace their front door speakers.

So I ordered 4 speakers from Crutchfield to try them all. Two fit perfectly: Alpine SPS-460A and JBL GTO6426. The JBL's, I had to remove a plastic ring that stuck up on the top of the speaker to get them to fit, but the Alpines are a PERFECT fit. They almost fit too well, in that the stock bracket sat so deep in the hole of the door that the stock grill almost didn't fit around the stock bracket due to the stock bracket being so recessed in the door panel. I used an extra washer behind the stock plastic spacers and it was fantastic. I highly recommend anyone looking for a door speaker for the 944 turbo with PW to get this speaker. It's also a dark speaker so it doesn't look too flashy/ghetto through the grill. Sounds good to my ears, and I've had quite a few 4x6's in that door that didn't fit but I did hear the sound quality of each. I called the Crutchfield guy and told him they should retry fitting the Alpine in the car just so they can have one speaker to recommend for the car make and model.

reviving an old thread here:

With a set of 4 Alpine SPS-460A's, how many watts would seem decent? 100, 150, 200?
