I have an 87' 944s and the Sonys fit my car perfectly with no modification at all. There as no mounting bracket for the stock speakers, they simply were screwed through the grill into the door panel...

I'm looking to get more sound from my speaker set up, before I debate going totally custom. Where did Porsche stick 10 speakers? Were they components, I know the rear panels have cutouts for 5.25" rounds. Anyone familiar with what to do with the fronts? I'm using the spare tire compartment for a 12" JL Audio subwoofer.
