You'll have to end up cutting the transmission carrier bar in order to fit a late gas tank in your early car. The later cars have the carrier bar bolted in with 2 bolts on each side where as the early cars the bar is just welded to the body. As far as mounting the tranny I have no idea but hopefully someone else will.

WOW I am very impressed in what you are doing here.....If you lived close by I would have no choice but be there to help you do it on your car, and then we could do it to mine.....Keep up the pics and your progress on this...This could be one hell of a killer write up here....! As far as the mounting the tranny, I would have no idea...I guess your best bet epuld have to be to actually go and look at a 968 and see how its done, if thats not an option, I would just wait and see on this thread, im sure somebody has the answer.....Or you will figure out something, cause if you have gone this far being the hardest part, which is buying the parts... I think you will be fine...!

Eirik (http://www.diateam.no/porsche/) let me know what they did - they retrofited the old mount brackets on the new transmission. This way, you avoid cutting the car up and having to replace the gas tank. Stupid me, I already have the old gas tank out :P. Anyhew, this seems to be a much better idea. Id rather avoid cutting the frame all up....

BTW, your tail lights are great. I was thinking about the red-out version.

Oh Man I have a feeling this thread is going to give me some ideas that I will have no choice but to persue...!

Yea, I figure I have 2 options.

Either A) I can cut out the old transmission carrier bar & drill 2 new holes for the new bar.
Or B) I can retro-fit the old tranny mounts on the new transmission.

They both take some creativity, no doubt. What do you guys think??

Sounds like a real problem. I might just leave out the tranny for the moment and get the motor working and drive it around to see how the old tranny holds up first. You could run into some real problems lining it up. Does the late style cross member bolt directly to the old mount points?

I would try option B first. I'm sure it can be made to work.

i have just dropped off & re-install 951 transmission. It does not have those kind of "side mounts" like your old 944 trans. I suppose newer 944/951 trans has the same system as 968 have

Hey guys...

Well, after much debate, and considering the opinions of you guys and the input from my neigbor (who, btw, used to build performance race cars and runs an auto shop from his garage), I cut the old carrier bar out.
I wanted to avoid cutting, but after consoling my neigbor, he told me that cutting the old bar out would be way easier, and probably hold the tranny a lot better.
So, I borrowed his saws-all and grinding wheel and went to town. The old carrier bar is out, and the frame looks clean. It wasnt welded on that well in the 1st place....it was mostly fastened with small rivits. Now, once I install the engine and get it connected to the torque tube, I can mount the tranny. Once everyting is lined up, Ill drill 2 holes in the frame to hold the carrier bar.

Ill post pics of my work here soon, for you guys that may attempt the same mod eventually......

Heres my next question for you guys - Do you think the old torque tube (to a early porsche 944) is the same as the torque tube to the 968?? Do you think everything will line up correctly? The bolt pattern looks to be the same between the new tranny and the old one....but Im still not sure.

Wacah think??

Thanks,

Jared

They are different. I believe the 968 torque tube is shorter than the 944 unit. If you're using the 968 tranny and bellhousing you will need the 968 torque tube also.
Keep us updated in this project, this is the kind of stuff I love. I may be helping a friend with a 968 engine swap in the future so I need all the info I can get.

Pete is right, the 968 torque tube is shorter, as the 968 bellhousing is longer. You can use a 944S flywheel, bellhousing and clutch and a 944 torque tube, I believe. An NA flywheel does not have the correct number of teeth for the DME pickup. I do not know what else might work. Maybe you can still get the torque tube from the yard that had the engine and trans?

If you need a 968 torque tube, post on the 968 forum here and on 968.net.
You definitely want to keep the 968 bellhousing. It makes future clutch changes much easier.
